Happy New Years from apricot rail.

Had a bit of a catch up last night before people depart again to their various corners of the globe. Thanks for coming out to those couple of shows we played - meant a lot to us to be able to do that again.

Been a lot of social media from us for the week - apologies. Hasn’t felt good but apparently necessary these days. And it’s not often we’ve got a show to plug.

We’re on at 9:10 tmrw night. Looking forward to seeing some old faces down there. The people who use to fill the bakery & mojos and even the good old hydey front bar 15 odd years ago. The folks who would sit cross legged, with their eyes closed while we carried on the legacy of other great Perth based dischordy, down-tempo bands.

We might be a touch rusty - though we’re going to iron out a few more creases tonight. It’ll be mostly songs from our (more familiar / easier to play) first album. Should be a good night of music - personally I can’t wait to see some live music and some new bands. Not something that happens very often these days.

Hopefully a few of you can make it. Last plug I swear!

Some quotable quotes from Jack and Mayuka last night.

‘So it’s got like a bit of a country drive to it…but not a country twang’

‘Saville hasn’t played drums for a while…he’ll be ok. Won’t he?

‘There was a seperate romantic story going on….but that’s not my story to tell’

‘I won’t play the trumpet… cause I don’t want to ruin everyone’s night.’

‘Everything you’ve ever learnt about playing guitar…doesn’t help you out’

‘You’ve got an almond tree? That’s sweet(!)’

‘You get a massive whiff of some beautiful flower or lavender or something’

Our last show was indeed in the pines 2017, but scrolling back it looks like that was our only show since 2014. So what have we been up to?

Mayuka has been teaching and playing music, parenting, and spending time in the veggie garden.

Jack is doing a PhD in English at Brown in Providence, Rhode Island

Burty works in HR at WA Country Health, started Golden West Brewing Co in Subiaco with some school mates, married Clementine, fathered Charlie.

Ambrose is also family man, and farms out in the Wheatbelt. In his spare time he makes Target Archery records and occasionally writes about wine.

Justin works with contracts at a university in Melbourne, and enjoys visiting Perth in between lockdowns.

Matt has been living and working in Perth as a filmmaker and is studying counselling. He tends to his garden and jumps in the ocean every day.

Apricot Rail - Surry Hills in Street Art by Peacock Visuals 25/10/2022

Excited and feeling very nostalgic about playing again next weekend, with a very important Apricot currently on a flight & heading to Perth as we speak!

Here is a video clip Peacock Visuals made for us a full decade ago of the first song to come to come off our second album ‘Quarrels’. Like a few rail tunes, this one was written mostly in absentia, with different members adding their own parts and touches.

Here’s an old interview from the old life is noise site.

"A Minute With Apricot Rail"
In the latest edition in our series of interviews with Perth artists, we spend a minute with Apricot Rail and ask them a thing or two…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Down-tempo/instrumental.

What’s going on right now in the world of Apricot Rail?
In the midst of writing our second record which is slowly taking shape. We’re launching our new single at the Bakery on the 6th of August which is the first of a new batch of songs, as well as supporting Marnie Stern and Akron Family in the coming months. Jack also just bought a new amp and its tone is pure golden!

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
Launching the first album was pretty fun & had a good vibe to it. Some of the most enjoyable have been simply playing to a few friends in a suburban lounge room or kitchen. Most of the lesser shows have been the ones plagued by technical problems, making do without a decent sound-check or trying to cram in on a small stage. With our set-up there[s so many things that can go wrong and gigs often descend into damage control fairly quickly.

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
Each song takes a really, really long time to write.

You’re putting together your perfect local gig? Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.

Stina, Adam Said Galore, Bluetile Lounge, Braving the Seabed in a lounge room where we can bring our own wine and pass out on the couch in front of the fire at 4AM. - Life Is Noise
