23 years ago this very day, Ibrahim Ferrer released his World Circuit solo debut, 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents', now considered to be a timeless classic from one of the greatest voices of the 20th century. Recorded in Havana with Ry Cooder, the album also features his Buena Vista friends, pianist Rubén González and vocalist Omara Portuondo. Legend has it that Ibrahim was born at a social club dance - he liked to say that he heard the rhythm of 'son' in the womb.

26 years ago this month, a group of musicians entered EGREM's Areito studios in Havana to begin recording 'Buena Vista Social Club'. Little did they know that what they would produce would become loved by millions of people around the world.

When Ibrahim received the call that some foreigners were interested in working with him, he had been convinced that his professional career was over and that success and recognition had been nothing but a dream. He was nearly 70 years old and had retired from music some years before. Then he walked into the Areito Studios to be greeted by Eliades Ochoa playing the introductory notes to ‘Candela’, the guaracha that had made him famous back home in Santiago de Cuba, and Ibrahim realised that music had not abandoned him.

Previously unheard track ‘Vicenta’ was recorded during the original 1996 Buena Vista Social Club sessions. A classic composition by Compay Segundo, it follows the story of a well known fire which, on 1 April, 1909, destroyed almost all of the village of La Maya, close to Santiago de Cuba. The new video features footage from the recording sessions and the streets of Cuba, captured by Susan Titelman.
