I visited my sibling's home in Japan. She runs a guest house in the deep countryside, Showa Village, in Fukushima. The guest house is a heartwarming place where many people gather at her old house which has stood for more than 100 years.

It offers a chance to experience the traditions of Japan and the new life in the village.

The second place we visited was an old school, "Kuimaru Elementary School." Despite being on the verge of demolition, it has been recently renovated, thanks to the investment and assistance from generous individuals. My son thoroughly enjoyed exploring the school, and sitting in the classroom, which brought back memories of my own school days.

At lunchtime, we enjoyed delicious Soba noodles at Ooashiya.

On the way back, we bumped into monkeys. They seem to be preparing for the long winter.

Those are very traditional patterns in our Japanese culture. H**p leaf sounds like a w**d. However, we have a long story about it.

In Japan, h**p and ramie have been widely used as fibers since ancient times, but it is entirely unclear when and how h**p first arrived in Japan. However, it is certain that it was already growing in various regions of Japan at a very early stage in the Jomon period (around 13,000 BC), as evidenced by archaeological excavations, indicating that the Jomon people had been using h**p in various forms for a very long time. The connection between the Japanese people and h**p can be traced back thousands of years through traditional industries and other means. Ramie is still highly regarded as the raw material for high-quality h**p textiles such as Ojiya chijimi and Echigo jo-fu.
It should be noted that after World War II, h**p cultivation was generally prohibited in Japan. However, the h**p traditionally grown in Japan is believed to have shallow levels of psychoactive compounds, and its use was limited to the textile industry.
Furthermore, under the current "Household Goods Quality Labeling Act," the only materials that can be labeled as "h**p" are linen and ramie (ramie), and h**p (h**p) is not designated as a fiber for this purpose.

The Story about Tokita Kobo

Kimono, a traditional Japanese clothing, have been present in my life since my childhood. As my family conducted Sado (茶道)、Tea Ceremony, the kimono was always around me.

Kimono clothing has been worn on a daily basis for over 1000 years. Unfortunately, Japanese people hardly get dressed in Kimono these days due to the difficulty of putting them on, the high expense and the inconvenience of wearing them while going about a daily routine. Kimono remains a precious attire nowadays and they are mostly used for special occasions such as wedding ceremonies, graduations and coming-of-age ceremonies.

Since I came to Canada, I barely have seen people in a Kimono. When I miss my home, I always recall my family wearing Kimonos. One day, an idea arose ‘Why don’t I share pieces of my Kimono fabric with other people here?’ It would be a beautiful opportunity to share our culture as well. That led me to start Tokita Kobo(時田工房).

Some people might wonder what Kobo(工房)means. Actually, it means a Japanese-style craft workshop. All of our products are handmade and almost all materials are imported from Japan. Tokita Kobo embeds a piece of Japanese home culture in each uniquely crafted product.
