Summer Research Job at OSU! Are you interested in biology, bioinformatics, and science education? from [email protected]

We are looking for a motivated and talented undergraduate student to work on our science outreach curriculum development project during summer 2017. As our NSF-funded summer student, you would be paid to work with Dr. Stephen Ramsey and one other undergraduate student, while you develop an exciting bioinformatics-related activity that will ultimately be used by high school students in after-school science clubs. In developing this activity, you will get to analyze protein sequence data from an 80 million year old dinosaur (!) in order to gain insights into the phylogenetic relationship between dinosaurs and modern metazoans. The summer work would involve writing, using bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, computer-based drawing, interacting and communicating with other researchers, and interacting and communicating with local experts in science outreach. The ideal applicant for this position will have previous coursework in biochemistry and biology, excellent written and spoken communication skills, and a strong desire to help us communicate our science to a broader audience. Computer skills (i.e., experience with command-line scripting) are a big plus. Successful completion of this summer work experience would be a good resume-builder for a STEM career. For students seeking to go to graduate school in a STEM field, it would also be a valuable demonstration of your commitment to STEM outreach, which is particularly useful for NSF fellowship applications. Time commitment is 20-30 hours/week for 10 weeks, at a pay rate of $10/hr. Please send your resume (with GPA) and brief email explaining your interest in the position, to [email protected]. Application due date is May 10th.
