On behalf of the Detroit Filmmaker Awards (DFA) team, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your unwavering support and participation in the past years. We take pride in the participation, integrity and prestige of the DFA and this year's event the participation was met with uncertainty.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of the Detroit Filmmaker Awards. After much consideration and reflection, we have come to the difficult decision not to hold the 4th Annual Awards Show.

The film industry is constantly evolving, and we have witnessed the immediate success and growth of many filmmakers within our community. We believe that it is in the best interest of the film community to step back and allow for unbiased and judgment-free growth. Our original intention was to create a program that celebrated the film community, bringing everyone together for one memorable night. However, it has become evident that our efforts may have unintentionally created a divisive atmosphere.

We acknowledge and respect the passion and dedication that filmmakers pour into their craft, and we never want any filmmaker to feel slighted or disheartened when recognition is not received for their work. Our goal has always been to celebrate quality filmmaking and the incredible talent within our community. Unfortunately, our acknowledgment may have been misconstrued, leading to unintended consequences.

We are incredibly grateful for the memories, achievements, and moments we have shared throughout the years. Your exceptional films have been a source of inspiration and joy, and we cherish the connections we have made with each one of you.

As we retire the Detroit Filmmaker Awards, we want you to know that our love and support for the film community remain unwavering. We are taking this time to redirect our energy and focus on presenting more promising efforts to support and elevate the film community.

A little history. I’ve been in film about 20 yrs. Some would say I was the first to inspire and start independent filmmaking in Detroit. I’ve thrown the biggest events to celebrate filmmaker’s and left my line open share invaluable information to established and aspiring filmmakers. I’m currently content director for Martha’s Vineyard African American FIlm Festival, Founder of the Detroit Filmmaker Awards and Festival Director of the Black Indiestream Film Festival. My goal has always been to connect filmmakers with opportunities I had to create on my own. This journey is an ongoing and I will always ask for the support to support you. This year BIFFA will be a beacon for opportunities, deals and networking. No other black independent film festival will create the synergy that will be on May 24-28th.
