More than 500 neighbors, partners, and community organizations joined me on Aug. 3 to celebrate the dedication of the South Los Angeles Greenway with a Green and Healthy Festival. This transformative initiative promises to revitalize Slauson Avenue by introducing new green spaces, recreational areas, and cycling and walking paths for residents to enjoy. Once completed, the Greenway will intersect a network of three NEW neighborhood parks in the 9th District: the Slauson Connect Recreation and Education Center; Sen. Bill Greene Memorial Park and Slauson & Wall Park, all in various stages of development. It will also connect to existing parks along Avalon Boulevard, including South LA Wetlands Park, South Park Recreation Center, and Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center. Follow along for a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of one of our beloved Field Deputies, Krissia Canas. By fostering relationships with community members, local leaders, and drawing on her roots in El Salvador, Krissia, a dedicated advocate from CD 9, strives not only to meet but to exceed the needs of our neighbors.
Rival neighborhoods that once stood at odds came together over the weekend to reaffirm their commitment to nonviolence by participating in America's favorite pastime together, baseball. As one of the pitchers for Saturday's game at South Park Recreation Center, where members of the 1992 LA Gang Truce faced off, I felt proud to witness players from opposing sides choosing unity over division. Looking back over three decades, we reflect on a time in our history that was once marked by peril and chaos but now stands as a symbol of hope. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of setting positive examples, as future generations are closely observing our actions. One game highlight was striking out Pastor Shep Crawford. No hard feelings Brother. Thank you to all of the partners that helped put this important event together.
Thrilled to have supported hundreds of deserving individuals in foster care at the Glamour Gowns and Suit Up event. Witness the joy and gratitude on the faces of local teens and young adults as they receive brand new formal wear and accessories, empowering them to experience special moments with confidence!
