On this day (21 Dec) in 1966, Jonah Barrington his first British Open title at the Lansdowne Club in London. The event was the first where the final was contested by two amateur players, was a complete sell-out, and in another first the semis and final were filmed from a glass panel in the court door, and from a camera above the front wall.
Barrington had beaten Egyptian holder Abdelfattah Aboutaleb in the quarters (‘Abou’s first defeat in UK after losing to Mohibullah Khan in the 1962 final), and Ibrahim Amin in the semis. His opponent was to be Aftab Jawaid, who beat fellow Pakistani Mohammed Yasin 3-2 in their last-four match.
