Fritjof Capra's Capra Course

Fritjof Capra's Capra Course

Capra Course is the online course from Fritjof Capra helping you understand the systems view of life!

Capra Course is my new online course, based on my textbook The Systems View of Life, coauthored with Pier Luigi Luisi and published by Cambridge University Press. This course is the realization of a dream I have had for many years. I hope that it will serve as a model for similar multidisciplinary courses at universities, colleges, and other institutions of learning.

Dr. Fritjof Capra was recently invited as a guest on the Entangled World podcast hosted by Najia Lupson!

The episode - The Systems View of Life with Fritjof Capra is out now and available on the following platforms:

🎧 YouTube: https://youtu.be/4-jrNx-dhSE?si=JSt6qdLxZKSnnjCS
🎧 ApplePodcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-systems-view-of-life-fritjof-capra/id1707038175?i=1000664702250
🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/23oDqUcrOsvNJbRfIEef03?si=XY7McGwwTQGR2ARjgFhVZw

In this conversation Fritjof talks about 4 key principles that summarize the culmination of his life’s work and what he calls the “systems view of life”:
1. Life organizes itself in networks of processes (chemical, biological, communications, etc.).
2. Life is inherently regenerative down to the molecular level.
3. Life is inherently creative.
4. Life is inherently intelligent.

They discuss how the mechanistic worldview which originated from Renee Descartes who viewed the mind (which he called the “thinking” thing) as separate from matter (which he called the “extended” thing) and which has been the dominant worldview is now finally being upended by a network-based worldview. The network worldview acknowledges that all of life is interconnected, co-evolving, and complex and therefore cannot be controlled.

They explore how the mechanistic worldview is still espoused by many technologists leading AI development who view intelligence as solely residing in the brain, discounting the embodied, felt ways of knowing that reside in the body.

And finally, they discuss the importance of putting life at the center of everything we do, of everything that is worth doing in this time of metacrisis.

The Entangled World podcast explores the global interrelated, existential social, economic, ecological, and technological challenges we face, their underlying drivers, and how a more beautiful world might emerge. In conversation with artists and academics, philosophers and philanthropists, spiritual seekers and scientists, technologists, and thinkers, we explore what is uniquely and meaningfully ours to do at this pivotal moment in time, in service to the sacredness of life.

Fritjof was recently featured on the Earth Charter Podcast ~ Systems Thinking, Science and Ethics driving a paradigm shift with Fritjof Capra" can be found in Spotify, Apple and other Podcast channels including through their Website at: https://earthcharter.org/podcast-list/fritjof-capra

In this episode, Fritjof comments on key ideas from his books and his work advocating for a shift from a mechanistic worldview to a systemic and ecological perspective. He argues that the mechanistic thinking model has failed to address complexities of our world. He emphasizes that life organizes itself in networks that are regenerative, creative, and intelligent, and he envisions a systems-based leadership approach. Supported by systems theory, he affirms that this new understanding of life reveals that major global issues are interconnected and require systemic solutions. Frifjof also advocates for a paradigm shift in ethics and values to address these challenges effectively. In this interview, he provides insightful reflections on systems thinking, the intersection of science and spirituality, the four principles of life and The Earth Charter.

On May 2nd, Fritjof Capra participated in a symposium celebrating the 100th anniversary of the University of Milan. The symposium was designed as an homage to Leonardo da Vinci who spent most of his adult life in the city of Milan. It took place in the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie which houses Leonardo's famous Last Supper. A panel of scholars gave short presentations on various aspects of Leonardo's work. Fritjof spoke about "Leonardo and Life."

In his talk, Fritjof presented Leonardo da Vinci as a systemic thinker, ecologist, and ecodesigner who, at the most fundamental level, always sought to understand the nature of life. Fritjof emphasized that Leonardo's persistent endeavor to put life at the very center of his art, science, and design, and his recognition that all natural phenomena are fundamentally interconnected and interdependent, are important lessons we can learn for our time.

The symposium was attended by 600 people. Video recording to coming soon!

Regenerative Finance and the Effects of Ignoring the Systems View of Life 23/03/2024

Regenerative Finance and the Effects of Ignoring the Systems View of Life - A Capra Course Alumni Spotlight with special guest Tanuja Prasad.

https://vimeo.com/926441562?share=copy

In this video, Tanuja leads us in an exploration about Regenerative Finance and the Effects of Ignoring the Systems View of Life and then Dr. Fritjof Capra shares his comments and feedback.

Taking the Capra Course in 2017 was a pivotal point in Tanuja’s life: she decided to make the systems view of life (and complexity science) central to everything that she does in her professional life.

Tanuja’s belief is in the essential oneness of the universe, and she seeks to manifest that in all her work. She has taken her background in electrical engineering, software and financial services technology, and is applying them to the needs of the zeitgeist by conducting research in, and building theories using complexity science.

Tanuja is a co-founder of the Regenerative Investing Institute - https://www.regenerativeinvestinginstitute.org/ Its mission is to bring business into regenerative relationship with the rest of the world through the practice of investing. In this way, the ‘whole’ is always part of business consideration. Central to its theory are the complementary polarities and metabolic patterns of living-systems.

Happy 85th Birthday Fritjof!

Everything is interlinked
By Stephan Cezanne

The physicist and philosopher Fritjof Capra has long advocated a unity of science and ethics. As early as the 1980s, he wrote that scientists were "not only intellectually but also morally responsible" for their research - at the time, particularly with regard to the dangers of nuclear power. Today, his warning remains frighteningly relevant in the face of new biotechnologies and artificial intelligence. Capra is 85 years old on February 1. He was born in Vienna in 1939 and now lives in the USA.

After studying physics in Innsbruck and Vienna, he conducted research in theoretical high-energy physics at various European and American universities from 1965 to 1985. Growing up on a farm in the south of Austria shaped his way of thinking early on: "In those first twelve years of my life, I had a very direct contact with nature," he writes in his latest book "Patterns of Connection" from 2021, an essence of his basic ideas.

He learned from Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) - one of the giants of modern physics along with Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr - that the "new physics" was associated with a radical change in the world view. At his first meeting with Heisenberg in 1972, the latter also drew parallels between the concepts of quantum physics and Indian wisdom teachings.

Capra himself has been interested in Eastern philosophy and religion, Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism since the 1960s. "I started meditating and experimenting with psychedelics, which many people were doing at the time," he once confessed.

Theoretical physics alone soon became too narrow for him, says Michael Hohl from the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau to the Evangelischer Pressedienst (epd): "I think he was one of the first to no longer feel comfortable in these academic niches," said the university lecturer, who researches and teaches design theory, cybernetics and transformation processes. Capra realized early on that "everything is connected".

But science today acts like the Asian parable of the group of blind men examining an elephant by touch, says Hohl: each man only finds one part, the trunk or tusk, without recognizing the whole animal. According to Capra, the crisis of the present is also a "crisis of perception, we are looking at the same object, but from different perspectives", adds Hohl: "Everyone has a completely different impression, but basically it's about the same thing. In other words, the climate crisis we are facing is just a section, a partial aspect of a huge crisis."

The world's problems are all interdependent: whether unemployment, overpopulation, human rights or climate change, Capra emphasizes. One example of this is the coronavirus pandemic: "From a systemic perspective, the coronavirus must be seen as a biological reaction of Gaia, our living planet, to the ecological and social emergency that humanity has brought upon itself," he concludes.

Capra's 1975 book "The Tao of Physics", which was long regarded as the "bible of the hippie generation", was a milestone in the spirit of optimism. He himself resists being appropriated as a New Age thinker. Capra expert Michael Hohl also sees this esoteric accusation as a misunderstanding. Capra's work is based on logical and clear scientific thinking.

Capra also wrote the screenplay for the film "Mindwalk" (1990) starring Liv Ullmann and John Heard, which was directed by his brother Bernt. The film is based on his 1983 book "The Turning Point". In it, Capra predicted that the ecology movement, the women's movement, the peace movement and other grassroots movements would form alliances and unite to form new political parties.

Since then, Capra has been promoting the concept of "deep ecology", which does not separate humans from their natural environment. It sees the world as a network of phenomena "that are fundamentally interconnected and interdependent".
The charming and much younger-looking ecological pioneer now lives with his wife and daughter in the Californian university town of Berkeley. He is "still in very good health." He still plays tennis. He was in Innsbruck and Italy last fall. Professionally, he is now largely retired, but still communicates his thoughts in his online "Capra Course".
