International Health Service is looking for volunteers willing to share their compassion, knowledge & skills on medical, dental & eye teams in
Honduras, C.A.
We are accepting applications for RN, Pharmacist, MD, NP,PA, DDS & General Helper, fix-it types who come from a wide variety of occupations.
We are planning 6 teams that provide care in remote areas that don’t have access to health care & are looking for your help. Despite the heavy rain that caused flight cancelations, we are on our way starting our IHS missions from October 20 to November 1. Over half the team is in Puerto Lempira and the remaining six team members will hopefully depart La Ceiba by plane, weather permitting, on Saturday.

There are two teams working in a remote area of Honduras called the Mosquito Coast (Eastern Honduras). The Medical/Dental Team travels by boat down the Kruta River visiting villages as far as Tiki Raya to help people in the remote villages. Patients are checked in to see a doctor or dentist or both. We have pharmaceuticals, deworming pills, and vitamins to distribute. Of course, there are often medical needs that require a specialist. We collect the patient’s information for follow up with other medical organizations that have the expertise. We have collected donations to send patients to hospitals in Honduras, as well.

The Eye Glass Team stays in Puerto Lempira and works out of a room at the local hospital. The team uses an Auto Refractor to determine a prescription and the traditional eye chart on the wall for screening patients. A good pair of glasses is found in boxes organized for searching through different strengths to find an exact match but sometimes close counts. We pass out readers and sun glasses as well.

It is still raining and overcast but hope the sun will be shining in the morning to fly to Puerto Lempira and get to work.
