Delta Waterfowl Missouri and Kansas
This is a page for all updates from local Delta Waterfowl chapters in the Missouri and Kansas region. Delta works hard to be “the voice of the duck hunter”.

Please stay off the water tomorrow.
If you’re considering hunting from a boat tomorrow, please don’t. At daylight here in MIssouri, the weather will be deceitfully calm. However, a rapid and extreme temperature drop coupled with 50mph wind gusts will make the smallest bodies of water treacherous. Ice will build on exposed surfaces at a rapid rate. Boats will quickly become top heavy and over burdened with ice. Even boat ditches in shallow marshes can be dangerous in those conditions.
Most all waterfowlers are wise enough to not push it tomorrow, but some undoubtedly will. If you know of anyone that is going out in a boat tomorrow, please get as much information from them as possible. Where they’re putting in, where they plan to go, and what time they expect to be off the water. Beg them to wear a life jacket. Bodies are much easier to responders to spot and recover if they’re floating. Sometimes seemingly lifeless bodies can be miraculously revived. Check in on them throughout the day.

The unavoidable truth here is that no amount of waterfowl are worth your life. Your family and friends would much rather see you again than for you to shoot a limit but not make it back home tomorrow.
Don’t be selfish and risk putting emergency responders in a position where they might have to perform rescue/recovery missions tomorrow. It is not worth it.
Stay home
Spend time with your family

Pictured - Adam Nixson who tragically passed away on December 28, 2015 while waterfowl hunting in MO. He left the boat ramp in a small boat, into blizzard conditions, with no life jacket on - and never returned.
It’s sad to consider, but without a doubt, if Adam were still alive, I would have hunted with him and we very likely would be good buddies today. I met one of Adam’s best friends, Dean Baldwin .for.adam shorty after his passing. Dean has created Bands for Adam to spread awareness about hunting and boating safety. You can get a free BE SAFE leg band from them to wear on your lanyard. The band serves as a reminder to be smart and to never take unnecessary risks in the field.
Real good stuff being done by the group at Wichita Delta Waterfowl Chapter in conjunction with Outdoor Mentors.

Great article written by local Delta Waterfowl Foundation volunteers and supporters Ryan Miloshewski and David Holzknecht in the recent Conservation Federation of Missouri magazine.
Although it would be a stretch to say that waterfowl hunting is a "cheap" sport to get into, it certainly doesn't need to be expensive. Cost is a major deterrant for many people that might otherwise be interested in becoming a waterfowl hunter. This article does a great job seperating the "needs" from the "wants" when it comes to duck gear.
Great job gentlemen!

The first flocks of bluewings migrating south - a sight for sore and sunburned eyes.
"When a bird hath flown through the air, there is no token of her way to be found, but the light air being beaten with the stroke of her wings, and parted with the violent noise and motion of them, is passed through, and therein afterwards no sign where she is to be found."

We'd like to extend a special congratulations to Chad Dawson on being selected a Volunteer of the Year Finalist for Delta Waterfowl Foundation.
Pictured is Chad along with his wife Briana Dawson and Delta Regional Director Garrett Trentham at the Champions of Delta Luncheon where Chad was presented with his award.
Chad has played a pivotal role in starting two incredibly productive and engaged chapters in Kansas. He is currently the chairman of the Butler County Delta Waterfowl chapter in El Dorado, KS. That chapter nearly doubled their net income in 2021. Chad has a passion for introducing the next generation to waterfowl hunting and assists with hunter recruitment events that are aimed at recruting youth, young adults, and women to the sport of waterfowl hunting. Chad also helps out with local hunting access projects including the new public access area at Harvey County East Park.
Join us in giving Chad a much deserved pat on the back!

Trying to stay positive here...
One, often overlooked, benefit of these blistering hot temperatures is the forced drawdown of permanent and semi-permanent wetlands across MO and KS.
This natural summer drawdown allows for moist soil plant seeds germinate - particularly those that are sitting below the normal pool level of these wetlands.
Low water levels allow those plants to sprout now and hopefully get flooded in the fall.
BAM - just like that the 100 degree temps sting just a little bit less.
Our chapters give back!
Beyond being a primary source of funding for all the work Delta Waterfowl does to produce ducks and secure the future of waterfowl hunting, our chapters go above and beyond to support the communties that support us.
Central Missouri Delta Waterfowl is hosting a clay shoot for local veterans as a thank you for their service. If you know of any veterans that would like to participate or if you would like to lend a helping hand to events like this, shoot us a message!
Quick tip - get up early to beat the heat!
Don't let the high temps break your daily retriever training regimen.
With temps getting into the triple digits, most ponds are still too hot at sunset for dogs to work in them for extended periods of time.
Get up early and run short sessions in and out of the water in the coolest daylight hours.
Visit local creeks with spring runoff to keep your dog cool during your session.
Even a short session at daylight each day or every other day is better than no training for days on end. Consistency is key!
We're ignoring these temps and going back to our happy place.
go away summer.
Come see us at Dive Bomb Industries Squad Fest!
If you can't shoot birds, shoot clays!
Join us on August 6th for the Route 66 Delta Waterfowl Chapter's Clay Shoot Fundraiser. We'll see you there!
Happy 4th of July from all of us here at Delta Waterfowl Missouri and Kansas!
Just remember, waterfowl hunting is easier with fingers, hands, and eyes - so exercise some level of caution when celebrating!
We're all looking forward to the real fireworks here in a few short weeks...
