Hummingbirds are only found in North, Central, and South America.
The hummingbird is a symbol of strength and bravery in Aztec/Mexica mythology. The Mexica God of War and of the Sun, was Huitzilopochtli ("The hummingbird from the south"). He was often shown in images as either a hummingbird or as a mighty warrior with a helmet of the bird's feathers. The Mexica people recognized hummingbirds as fearless fighters. It was admired because despite its size, it showed great strength, ferocity, tenacity, and a divine power to fly!
They also believed that the hummingbird was a symbol of rebirth, and were the reincarnation of fallen warriors. After their deaths, warriors first formed part of the sun's retinue; then after four years, they went to live in the small bodies of hummingbirds to serve as messengers.
Myths also depict the tiny birds as a healer or a spirit sent to help people. The tiny, but mighty hummingbird is said to inspire you to follow your dreams, even when life is filled with hardship, setback or obstacle - to fight through the many challenges.
The hummingbird's symbolic meaning is a positive one. It is associated with healing, wisdom, and endurance.
