2016 Teaching Tolerance Award Winner Cody Miller 19/07/2016

Meet Henry Cody Miller, who goes by Cody. He brings empathy and honesty into his classroom each day. As a ninth-grade English Language Arts teacher, he uses a windows-and-mirrors approach for his instruction, making sure all students in his class have mirrors of themselves in the books they read as well as windows into other people's stories. Miller also co-constructs the curriculum with his students, allowing them to suggest texts and books that interest them. "I believe the curriculum has to be a living, breathing entity, and I think it has to be made with teachers and students in mind," he says.

Seattle’s universal preschool program, funded by the voter-approved $58 million levy, will begin as a pilot next September, opening to only 14 classrooms. The eventual goal, as the name suggests, is universal pre-k for all families. But in the first years, the pilot program will focus on children from poorer neighborhoods and those populations that stand to gain the most from a pre-k program.

Thanks to Vince Dreyer for organizing this awesome event at Whatcom Community College!

On Thursday April 16th 2015, the Teachers of Tomorrow Club at Whatcom Community College hosted a free screening of the documentary "Go Public: A Day in the Life of an American School District." This film is very inspiring and gives a first person view into what one day at school looks like. Not only does it follow students and teachers, it also includes many of the other people in charge of the very important behind the scenes work. Parents, administrators, janitors, food service personnel and other support staff are also extremely vital to the inner workings of our schools. Superintendent Dr. Linda Quinn of Ferndale School District, and Director of Teaching and Learning Steve Morse of Bellingham School District were in attendance and participated in the discussion afterward. This DVD will be available for check out in the WCC’s library. I strongly recommend you to watch this film!

Like us and then share a favorite quote about education. (Maybe it will be a quote that you hear or see today at the conference.) The person who posts the quote with the most likes and comments will win a $25 Starbucks gift certificate that will be e-mailed when the contest finishes on June 5.

Here’s a quote by Albert Einstein to get you started:
"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of minds to think."

With a little research, I found out that is a synthesized quote. The actual quote goes like this: “It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts, but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.”
