EGR Taylor Lecture 2024
10th October
Time 1830 BST
Venue Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2AR
Entrance : Free, but must be booked in advance on the RGS website.

Captain Michael Barritt: Pathfinding for the Fleet: Front-Line Hydrography 1793-1823.

This is a ‘save the date’ notification of the forthcoming lecture. Booking will open later in the year on the RGS website ( Events - RGS).

Captain Michael Barritt will pick up the theme of his 2017 E.G.R. Taylor Lecture, showing the evidence that belies the received wisdom that the Royal Navy of the period showed neither interest in nor aptitude for hydrography, and that there was clear encouragement from leaders such as Nelson. Case studies will illustrate challenges and achievements with the often limited means at the disposal of the practitioners, show how men with higher skills were identified, and consider the background of the different educational regimes in Scotland and England. The lecture will tap into the rich visual material preserved in archives, especially that of the UK Hydrographic Office.

There is a supper afterwards and that can also be booked be booked through the RGS website.

On Tuesday 28 May, members and friends of The 1805 Club enjoyed a visit to Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire, with a fascinating private viewing of three magnificent solid silver and silver-gilt vases commissioned by Lloyd's Patriotic Fund in 1803-1809 to honour outstanding Royal Navy officers. We were also shown equally splendid wine coolers, and a mystery piece skilfully made but with no known purpose!

Organised by our Honorary Secretary Stephen Howarth, this viewing, with expert commentary from National Trust consultant Jane Ewart, was a considerable privilege: the vases are of such value and rarity that they are usually held in the Abbey's strongroom. A full report will appear in the next issue of our twice-yearly magazine, The Kedge Anchor.

🚨We are currently recruiting a Second Mate!🚨

Due to one of our current Second Mates going on a sabbatical, an opportunity has opened for us to recruit a new Second Mate for our tall ship the Pelican of London.

The ideal candidate will have a background in sail training, including time spent as a Deck OOW in sail training vessels over 24m LWL length, and will hold the NI/STI International Sail Endorsement for Square Rig; however this is not essential and applicants from other seafaring backgrounds will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Burke, Virginia to see the replica of the Horatio Nelson captain's uniform by Henry Poole and Co. of Savile Row, London. Jessica painted a portrait of Nelson and gave several copies to the Club. The 1805 Club Nelson Uniform Project is reaching another milestone! On 15 March, 1805 Club Chairman John Rodgaard, US Secretary Pete Stark (on the right in the photo -with the Project Manager, Matt and Preservation Specialist, Tessa), and Dr Judy Pearson (not pictured) made a field trip to EXPLUS, the company in Sterling, Virginia. EXPLUS is manufacturing the display case for the replica of Horatio Nelson’s captain’s uniform that will be shipped to the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society for placement in the soon-to-be-opened Nevis Maritime Museum.

The 1805 Club maintains a special interest in Nevis in the West Indies because that is where then Captain Horatio Nelson patrolled the waters in HMS Boreas to reinforce the Navigation Acts, and where he met and married Frances Nisbet in 1787. The Club has arranged with Henry Pool and Co. of Savile Row, London, to fabricate a replica of Nelson’s captain’s uniform and tricorn hat as a gift to Nevis. The ensemble was unveiled at the club’s 2023 annual general meeting in London, much to the delight of everyone in attendance. Since then, the uniform and hat have been transferred Virginia, awaiting the manufacture of an environmentally-controlled display case that will hold them. The case will be ready for shipping this year.
