Find what works for you! We love this from who says: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again...no matter how hard we can try to alter our bodies, we are not going to look like the person next to us. Or the person in magazines. Or the person on your IG feed. Etc.
Your body is different and unique. It has different needs nutrition wise, movement wise, and mental health wise. Of course we should always want to take care of ourselves but, always keep in mind what works best for your individual self. Your meals don’t have to mimic your friends’. You don’t have to go to that exercise class you can’t stand because everyone else seems to be doing it. You don’t have to take care of your mental health the same way as anyone else. Find what works for you. Your body will always thank you.✌🏽

Feeding Littles
Today’s friendly PSA: food preferences and food rules are not the same thing 🙅🏻♀️ All too often the two get confused as being one and the same so let’s unpack this a little bit.
😋 A food preference is based on whether or not you like a food based on taste, texture, how it’s made, how it’s served, who made it, etc. A food rule is an external cue used to either grant permission to eat something or otherwise assign morality to a food choice (as in, “I’m ‘good’ because I made a healthy choice/stuck to my diet/stayed on the meal plan”
🤔 Identifying and respecting food preferences are a big part of intuitive eating. So is avoiding foods that you’re allergic/intolerant to. There is no rule in IE that says you have to eat things you don’t like or that make you feel like 💩
☹️ Dieting often ignores preferences and can teach us to override them. Ask yourself, “if I didn’t know how many calories/carbs/nutrients were in this food, would I still like it?” If the answer is “yes” = food preference. If the answer is “no” or “I’m not sure” maybe it’s time to ask yourself why you’re eating it.
It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and the theme is “Come As You Are.” So bring on all your food preferences, as weird or unique as they might be. There’s no shame in liking what you like. But food rules are a part of dieting and dieting is a predictor or predecessor of an eating disorder for some (NOT ALL) people.
If eating something feels like breaking a rule, “being bad” or a “guilty pleasure” it might be time to rethink how you frame your food decisions and whether or not they’re actually helpful for what really matters to you.
Eating disorders awareness week is coming up! MEDA will be hosting many events to celebrate—stay tuned for a specific schedule!

“Diets teach us that hunger is something to manipulate, control, avoid. The tricks of dieting teach us how to stave off hunger for as long as possible using ridiculous things like drinking water or zero-calorie beverages, distracting ourselves, or replacing what we really want to eat with diet-y versions of something else. No. No. No. None of these help us understand how to properly nourish and feed our bodies and it doesn’t promote body trust.”

“Remind yourself each day that the food does not have the power, but rather you have the power. Trust yourself and work on improving your capacity to decipher between what your cravings are telling you and why. Most importantly, be kind to yourself! Select foods that make you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally satisfied.” -wise words from my amazing colleague Ryann Hilton, RD, LDN, CEDRD
