We love our oceans and its amazing inhabitants. Sea turtles are one of our planets most beautiful creatures, and they can grow up to 3 metres long, weighing as much as 750 kgs, and many of them have stunningly beautiful shells. However, this is where the problem lies for many species of turtle - they are poached for their shells to the point where they are now close to extinction. This, alongside the damage that is often caused to their natural habitats by fishing by-catch, ghost fishing gear and climate change, is why sea turtle conservation is so important.

All of the turtles found in South Africa including loggerheads, leatherbacks, green turtles and hawksbill turtles, are classified as endangered on the IUCN red list.
However, South Africa has been a world leader in sea turtle conservation, thanks to the efforts of Dr. George Hughes and his colleagues since 1963. Nesting loggerhead female numbers have increased from about 200 observed annually in the 1960’s to more than 1000 currently due to the conservation efforts by this dedicated team.

You can get involved in Sea Turtle conservation by getting in touch with the many conservation projects around the world and make a difference towards the protection of our oceans and its inhabitants.
