One of the most important responsibilities of an IT professional is interviewing. A question which sometimes gives candidates who want to join my team a headache concerns a cool project they have recently worked on.

The reason this question may make them feel exposed include:

1. The definition of a project differs per company
2. The structure of projects in big companies may mean that you work on the same thing in different projects - nothing cool about that.
3. You work on multiple projects every day so it's difficult to pick just one on the fly. By the way you are allowed to say to the interviewer: "Can I put a check on this one so we can come back to it later?".

What the interviewer is looking for:
1. Can you identify opportunities to improve your work by automating mundane tasks

2. Can you use the STAR approach in your response

The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to a behavioral-based interview question by discussing the specific Situation, Task, Action, and Result of the situation you are describing.

Tips:
a. Research widely about any position you are applying for so you can give relevant exampled.

b. Research widely about the company and its culture. The announcements page on the company website can tell you a lot about innovative projects there.

c. Make a list of all success stories that you have been part of in your career.

d. It's usually easy to remember your worst moments in your career in an interview, but make a note of them and the lessons you learned from them.

Career Suggestions:
a. Always look for an opportunity to initiate a project in your work. Think about creating shared value, a project that will benefit the company while making your work easier.

b. The project should give you the opportunity to work on a solution from end-to-end. Don't just be a tester or developer, involve yourself in the whole delivery.

b. Use your own innovation time to do end-to-end POCs.

Remember, technical interviews are usually one professional discussing with another professional. If you don't know something, there's usually a reason why. Is it a valid reason or is it just that you're not curious enough?
