8 more rabbits vaccinated 💉

Our final group of rabbits got their RHD vaccine booster for this year, making sure everyone is protected as we head into September (when RHD cases are expected to spike again) everyone is back home and although a little grumpy from the car ride, are all doing great and tucking into their dinner

Please do get your rabbits vaccinated! there is no better way to protect them and help prevent major outbreaks, ❗️please note there will be no more vaccines available from aug 29th onwards so please do get them vaccinated within the next week or so ❗️

Massive thanks to CCentre for Avian, Reptiles and Exoticsfor vaccinating this bunch 💚

The lovely 8 year old roo has been staying with us for bonding over the past week, she is bonding with our sister pair lynx and Lyra 🤍🤎🧡

Age is not a barrier for bonding, rabbits of any age can find companions and age gaps are also perfectly fine when bonding, lynx and Lyra are just 2 years old but their personalities have fit perfectly with roo’s

Introducing a new rabbit after an outbreak of RVHD2 14/08/2024

Introducing a new rabbit after an outbreak of RVHD2 “How long should I leave it before introducing a new rabbit after an outbreak of RHD2?” is a really difficult question to answer…

Notice:

We will know longer be working with foster homes. until further notice all rabbits will be housed at the main premises here with me, (except for Finley and chance in joburg, they will stay with their amazing foster mom)

Although we have had a very few amazing fosters, who we appreciate greatly, the many negative experiences we’ve had working with fosters has far outweighed that.

Between fosters not following clear instructions on how to care for their foster rabbits, people not listening to keeping their rabbits separate from the fosters, not following biosecurity protocols, not notifying us of the foster rabbit becoming ill, not providing updates on the rabbits well-being when asked, saying they can foster for a few months and then wanting to return the rabbit a few days later, and having to scramble to find a new placement. to fosters straight up trying to rehome a rabbit without permission! I have simply had enough.

I guess a lot of this speaks to my ability to screen potential fosters and I have clearly failed in that regard and put our rabbits in unsafe situations, something I seriously regret.

It would be a dream to have a large network of reliable fosters as it would allow us to help so many more rabbits, but those people seem impossible to find. i hope to be able to change this in the future But at least for now, trying to manage rabbits in foster care is much more work and stress then it is worth at the moment.

Should we ever start working work fosters again, I will be thoroughly reevaluating our foster vetting process as it was clearly not adequate.

There may be exceptions to this in emergency situations and for people we know personally who are trustworthy who may want to foster. but we will not be actively seeking to place our rabbits in foster homes anymore.

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
I am urging all rabbit owners to please get yourselves ready for RHDV Spring surge, have on hand what you need by month end. Stear clear of animal parks, petting farms, esp Bokkie Park in Benoni where we know is going to be huge spread again, and all other areas where rabbits roam, congregate or where people with animals can congregate.
This is only our 3d Spring Surge year.
(Year one - Northern Cape 2022 with isolated cases in CT because of correct protocols and lockdowns,
Year 2 last year, we all know how that went, over 120,000 rabbits in total dead in the country.
We do NOT know what this year will bring, esp as the correct protocols in burrials have not been followed by over 80% of RHD cases.
RHD can lie dormant underground in certain depths and temperatures for up to 8 months. We have seen first hand in Garden Route in George where a mole dug through a burrial site that was not deep enough and reinfected a close rabbit colony. (Mole heaps on 15 April, dead rabbits in the camp 20m away on 18 April, all passed in 2 days, Blanco, George. Mole was caught in the camp while digging up, to stop further spread.
Maybe we will have a calm Spring Surge, maybe not. Please get ready, plan to buy your F10, Colloidal Silver etc beforehand, get your biosecurity protocol in place and ready to implement, and stear clear of people or animals that you do not know. This includes stray cats. If you feed any other roaming animals and esp if your rabbits have not been vaccinated (not everyone can afford, and with the Aug expiry its a mess) please ensure esp on biosecurity, outside shoes, foot/shoebaths, over coats and sanitiation.
The world goes on, but we need to be vigilant and make it a way of live during the surge time.
We will only have proper data on prospective spread, projections on spread and cases after this year.
Remember that vaccinated rabbits can still contract and spread RHD, and they can still become very ill if not supported with medications and fluids.
SPRING 2024 WILL BE THE YEAR THAT WILL SHOW THE TREND OF RHD IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Note: I have been told by some people that Virusses does not exist. So virus or not, something is killing off thousands of rabbits in one go and its not "their bodies getting rid of toxins vai a snotty nose". Rather be prepared for something out there. Rabbit Heamorrhagic Disease is real.
Remember to spread the word and have everyone with losses report on the RHD.of-Africa.com website so we can give the infections and projections through at the end of the season, as this is very important in getting the next vaccine permits approved.
Government has left the rabbit fraternity to manage, report, follow and track this worldwide notifyable disease on our own. No stats and data, no permits.

RHD of Africa 11/08/2024

RHD of Africa It has been shown in patterns all over the world that Autumns create a small spike in cases as the temperatures drop, while full-blown breakouts and surges hit during springtime. This is because of the medium temperatures experienced in these seasons. Special Care should be taken to ensure that we d...

This may feel like a small part of starting a rescue but it’s so important it deserves a post of it’s own!

To make a positive different to the lives of rabbits it is imperative that you are able to say no. You will likely get to the point where you have to say no to around 10 rabbits in need a day. You need to have the discipline to say no from the start.

The rabbits who are currently in your care should always be your main priority. No matter how urgent a case is, if it means you are unable to financially, emotionally or practically provide the highest level of care to the rabbits you have already committed to, you must say no.

As long as your rabbits are getting their needs met

•a safe, clean, enriching environment
•correct diet and water
•vet care
•companion from another rabbit
•groomed/nails trimmed
•toys and enrichment

They would much rather stay with YOU! then go live in a rescue or shelter

'I don't have the time to spend with her anymore.'

Okay but a shelter or rescue with significantly more animals does?

Breaking: USDA Calls Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza the largest animal disease event in US History.

Millions of animals have died at the hands of this disease - made possible by the horrific conditions in industrial farms.

The disease has spread to wild animals and those in sanctuary, not only in birds, but cows, pigs, big cats and more. The disease is rapidly mutating and so sanctuaries of all kinds should be considering biosecurity protocols to protect residents, as well as food sourcing for carnivores who have contracted it from infected feed.

Here are some important resources:
Case Map + Guidelines: https://tinyurl.com/bdcyxe89
Sanctuary-Friendly Guidance from our friends at The Open Sanctuary Project: https://opensanctuary.org/hpai-biosecurity-plan-and-checklist/

Stay safe sanctuary friends.

Urgent notice, ALL RHD vaccines within South Africa are expiring at the end of aug, we do not yet know when the new batch will arrive but if past experiences are anything to go by it will still be many many months before the new import permit gets approved, if your rabbit is due for their vaccine please do so ASAP! ♥️🙏🏻

There are many outdated forms of rabbit care that are unfortunately still prompted today, and a water bottle is one of those, they are simply not suitable for rabbits at all, rabbits are just too big and need much more water then a bottle can provide, imagine only ever being able to drink out of the tiniest (probably dirty) straw for your entire life, switch to a big heavy water bowl 💙

Happiest adoption day to our pretzel boy! 🤎

After 722 days at the rescue, he finally has a best friend and forever family, little pretzel came to the rescue on aug 11th 2022 at 12:09pm, along with his mom and multiple siblings from two separate litters (most of which are still with us) after fighting off coccidia and spending some time in foster care, he has been here with us ever since, being moved around to different rooms and pens, while he watched other rabbits arrive and others leave, while waiting ever so patiently for his day to come… and after nearly 2 years the day has finally come for him to leave this chapter of his life behind and begin a whole new journey 🗺 I will miss you dearly but i am over the moon that you finally have a rabbit companion of your own to share your adventures with!

we love you little guy, go on and live your best life! ✨ I am glad I could be a part of your journey.
