Preening time 🥰

Our African Penguin neighbours waterproof themselves using their beak to spread oil from a gland at the base of the tail, and are often seen preening each other (allopreening). Allopreening helps birds preen clean and arrange feathers in areas they cannot reach, such as their neck.

Allopreening also strengthens bonds between mates ❤

Penguins aren't the only cute little creatures you will see when you visit us at Boulders Beach.

Cape Rock Hyraxes or Dassies, as they are more commonly known, also call Boulders Beach their home. They look a bit like guinea pigs, but their closest DNA relative is actually the African Elephant!

You'll see them hanging out on the rocks soaking up the sun or foraging for grasses and leaves.

Did you know that the black spots on an African Penguins chest and belly are unique to each penguin, just like human fingerprints?

Their white and black plumage serves to camouflage them from predators, white from below and black to aerial predators 🐧
