Happy River Horse Day! 🦛

Today we celebrate our third largest land mammal, the Hippopotamus! These incredible animals spend up to 16 hours submerged in water and display a unique walking motion on the river floor.

Despite their hefty appearance, hippos can reach speeds of 36km/h on land. Contrary to their massive canine teeth, they primarily graze on grass, occasionally munching on old elephant dung during low grass yield periods.

The hippo has unfortunately earned the sobering title of the second most dangerous animal in Africa, after the malaria-carrying Anospheles mosquito, due to a longstanding and sometimes perilous conflict with humans, especially when hippos encounter humans between themselves and their safety zone which in the water.

So as we celebrate World Hippo Day, we would like to also raise awareness about the importance of coexistence and understanding in their wild habitats. 🦛🧡
