Finally done with “the Emperor’s new clothes” addressing ghost netting (fishing nets that have been lost or abandoned in the ocean) Many animals that get entangled in these nets die a slow and painful death through suffocation or exhaustion

Picked up some prints today

Took a little detour from my "under the sea" theme for the year to do something fun and colourful.

About halve of the 202 chameleon species are threatened or near threatened mainly due to deforestation and the pet trade.

Chameleons do not change colour based on their surroundings, but because of their mood, changes in light or temperature or the humidity of their environment. Different chameleons will also have different colours. For instance, more dominant males will have brighter colours and the females will change their colours based on whether they eant to accept or reject a suitor.

Hoping to finish the over the weekend

I’ve decided to revisit the pangolins and add some colour.

This baby went off to the printers to be scanned today. (This is just a mock-up)

Nearly all species of sea turtle are now classified as endangered with three of the existing seven species being critically endangered.

The mechanical inlays in this sketch have a twofold purpose- it represent the pipes and steel in an oil rig and once again alludes to the idea that we will be left with robotic animals if we don't protect them from extinction.

Did you know that the temperature of the developing eggs is what decides whether the offspring of turtles will be male or female? This is called temperature dependant s*x determination.
If the eggs are incubated below 28℃ all the turtles hatching from them will be male and above 31℃ every egg gives rise to a female. At temperatures in between both s*xes will hatch.

As the earth experiences climate change sea turtles may be driven into extinction by creating a shortage of males and they already have the odds stacked against them with only about 1 turtle that reaches adulthood for every 1000 eggs laid.

There is just so much to say about these amazing cephalopods…from their 3 hearts, 9 brains, blue blood, intelligence, short lifespans, the ability to change colour or regrow its arms…the list goes on…

There are about 300 species of octopus of which 3 are currently listed as endangered.

A reminder to all of us to think about our trash this year! Plastic debris is currently the most abundant type of litter in the ocean, making up 80% of all marine debris!

South Africa’s national bird- the Blue Crane has largely disappeared from the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and Swaziland in the last two decades. Between 10000 and 20000 birds remain and is now classified as vulnerable on the endangered species list.
