African People First (APF) Strongly Condemns Democratic Alliance's (DA) Endorsement of Dr. Death Event in the Western Cape

January 26, 2024 – The African People First (APF), a prominent advocate for justice, equality, and the well-being of African communities, is issuing a resounding condemnation of the Democratic Alliance (DA) led Western Cape Government's endorsement of the upcoming Dr. Death event, and posted on the DA official page, that was scheduled to take place in February 2024.

Dr. Wouter Basson, infamously known as "Dr. Death," played a controversial role during the apartheid era, engaging in activities that were widely deemed unethical and harmful to many South Africans. The APF is deeply troubled by the DA-led Western Cape Government's decision to support an event featuring an individual associated with such a dark period in our history, raising serious ethical questions and reflecting poorly on the DA's commitment to fostering a society built on principles of justice, equality, and inclusivity.

The APF is particularly alarmed by the historical context surrounding this event. The DA has previously been implicated in celebrating the tragic events in Phoenix, KZN, in 2021, where posters circulated by the party appeared to glorify those involved in the violence. This pattern of behavior is deeply troubling and suggests a disturbing trend of insensitivity towards the lives of black Africans. The APF views the endorsement of the Dr. Death event as a second act of the DA celebrating the death of black African life.

Moreover, the fact that the event is organized by Monne Kuier and endorsed by the Western Cape Government, with an entrance fee of R220, raises significant concerns about the prioritization of financial gain over ethical considerations. The APF firmly believes that events of this nature, with controversial figures as keynote speakers, should not be supported by government entities, especially when there is a risk of perpetuating harmful narratives.

DA's Historical Insensitivity: The DA's historical insensitivity, as demonstrated in the Phoenix incident, raises concerns about the party's commitment to acknowledging the pains of the past and fostering an inclusive and non-discriminatory society.

Financial Prioritization Over Ethics: The event's endorsement, despite its controversial nature, raises concerns about the Western Cape Government's prioritization of financial gain over ethical considerations.



APF's Urgent Calls:
The APF urgently calls on the DA-led Western Cape Government to reconsider its endorsement of the Dr. Death event and to reflect on the message it sends to the public. The inclusion of Dr. Wouter Basson as a keynote speaker at a public event raises ethical questions about the values upheld by the DA and its commitment to fostering an inclusive and non-discriminatory society.

The APF further calls on the Western Cape Government to reassess its criteria for endorsing events and to ensure that such endorsements align with principles of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity. Events that may be perceived as celebrating a dark chapter in our history should not receive support from government entities.

PRESS STATEMENT: IEC's Alleged Involvement in Political Space

African People First (APF) issues this press statement to express deep concern over recent reporting on the Independent Media (iol website) allegedly suggesting that former President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Mhlanganyelwa Zuma is ineligible to take part in upcoming elections. As an organization dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring fair electoral processes, we feel compelled to address the apparent deviation from the IEC's anticipated role in guaranteeing free and fair elections.

The IEC, as the custodian of the electoral process, bears the crucial responsibility of safeguarding its integrity, ensuring impartiality, and refraining from displaying bias towards any political party. Recent developments have raised suspicions that political interests may be influencing the IEC, potentially compromising the neutrality vital for the proper functioning of democratic elections.

Of particular note is the fact that the election registration process has not yet commenced, and the President of the country has not declared the official date for the elections. Despite this, the IEC allegedly made comments to a publication, denying Jacob Zuma the right to contest elections, even though he has not expressed any intention to do so. This premature action by the IEC raises questions about its motives and suggests the possibility of an underlying agenda.

We question the necessity for the IEC to publicly comment on the online publication regarding Jacob Zuma's eligibility without any indication of his interest in running for the presidency. Jacob Zuma has neither declared his candidacy nor submitted any nomination forms. The seemingly premature revelation of his criminal record without due process appears to be a desperate attempt to discredit the newly formed Umkhonto Wesizwe Party. Such actions are not in the best interest of political diversity and democratic participation.

APF calls on the IEC to adhere to its constitutional mandate of neutrality in the election process. We urge the organization to issue a public apology and retract its statement. Failure to do so may leave APF with no choice but to pursue legal action to rectify this apparent breach of impartiality.

It is crucial to reiterate that the IEC's recent assertion, citing Section 47(e) of the Constitution, suggests that Jacob Zuma cannot run for the presidency due to his criminal record. However, we emphasize that this conclusion is premature, as Zuma has not expressed any intention to participate in the upcoming elections.

African People First (APF) remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a democratic environment where all political parties and individuals can participate without fear of unfair interference. We trust that the IEC will reconsider its actions and uphold the principles of impartiality and fairness throughout the electoral process.
