π¨ππ₯ Media Statement: Protection of Graves at Lujiza Cemetery Duncan Village
Media statement from the Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Person Unit concerning a disturbing issue that has come to our attention. We have received numerous complaints from members of the public regarding the construction of informal shacks on top of graves at Lujiza Cemetery in East London. This blatant disregard for the sanctity of sacred burial sites is not only a violation of human rights but also a profound disrespect towards the deceased and their families.
The families affected by this situation are left with no option but to consider exhumation due to the violation of their loved ones' graves. Such actions are deeply offensive, particularly within the African cultural context, where respect for the deceased is of utmost importance. The construction of these shacks has resulted in the graves being exploited for illegal activities, including copper burning and drug gathering, further exacerbating the problem. Disturbingly, we have also observed that some graves are being used as dumping sites, with visible litter such as plastic, disposable nappies, and other waste strewn across them.
In response to these grave concerns, the Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Person Unit has decided to take a firm stand. We are in the process of opening a case docket against individuals responsible for erecting these informal settlements atop the graves. We believe that it is imperative to uphold the dignity of our deceased and ensure that their resting places are respected.
Furthermore, we plan to engage with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality to discuss this matter extensively. Our objective is to seek legal advice regarding the eviction of those individuals residing in these informal settlements within a 30-day timeframe. It is crucial that we take action to restore the sanctity of the cemetery and protect the rights of the families who have been affected by these inappropriate activities.
We will continue to keep the public informed as we proceed with our efforts to address this issue. Our commitment to upholding human rights and cultural dignity remains steadfast.

ππ¨ππSwift and coordinated response of various emergency services during the incident that occurred on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at approximately 10:45 AM at Queenspark Zoo, East London.
On that day, we received a call regarding a 6 year old young child who had fallen into an open drain and was swept away by the flowing sewage. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, multiple emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, including the Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Persons Unit, to initiate an extensive search operation.
In the face of such a critical incident, our teams worked unfalteringly to follow the drain pipes and search various exit points and manholes in hopes of locating the child. I am pleased to report that, through the collaboration of our dedicated personnel, the child was successfully located and extricated from the drain in CBD next to Taxi Rank . This vital operation involved the participation of numerous stakeholders, including:
- Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Persons Unit

- SAPS K9 (Search and Rescue)
- SAPS

Eastern Cape Human Rights And Missing Person Unit writing to inform you about the recent compliance operation conducted on 1 August 2024, in collaboration with Border Management Authority, SARS, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, and the Department of Home Affairs (Immigration Services).
The operation aimed to address critical issues affecting our province, including the sale of expired food and counterfeit products. Additionally, it was discovered that one shop was operating under the credentials of a doctor who is no longer in practice. These initiatives are a vital part of our collective efforts to combat the economic challenges faced in our province while ensuring the protection of consumer rights.
It is imperative to emphasize that the sale of medications in spaza shops is strictly prohibited by law. This practice not only contravenes legal regulations but also poses a significant danger to consumers, who may be unaware of the risks associated with using unregulated medications.
We remain committed to taking decisive action against any practices that undermine the safety and well-being of our community.

π§πππ¦ Eastern Cape Human Rights And Missing Person Unit to address a serious matter that has recently come to our attention.
It has been brought to our notice that a concerning incident took place at the Nemato Police Station in Port Alfred. It has been reported that alcohol, which was seized by South African Police Service Members during an operation, has gone missing from the station premises. The seizure of the alcohol was initially conducted as the officials present were not acquainted with the nature of the alcohol in question.
Understandably, this incident has sparked outrage among the community members, who are now questioning the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the alcohol from the Police Station. The lack of clarity and accountability regarding this matter reflects poorly on the integrity of the law enforcement agency and raises serious concerns about negligence.
In light of these developments, it has come to our attention that community members are planning to march to the police station on 16 July 2024 to demand answers and seek resolution to this alarming issue. It is imperative that swift action is taken to address this situation before it escalates further and tarnishes the reputation of the law enforcement authorities.

π§ππ¦ππ Compliance operation conducted by the Eastern Cape Human Rights And Missing Person Unit in collaboration with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, East London Immigration, and the SAPS.
The operation commenced in Vincent and subsequently proceeded to Beacon Bay (Nompumelelo), where our dedicated team achieved significant success. As a result of our efforts, a total of 33 undocumented foreign nationals were apprehended, and a considerable quantity of prohibited and scheduled medication valued at R4,600 was seized from a local shop.
It has come to our attention that these confiscated medications, which are intended for legitimate medical use, are being misused by school children as drugs. Shockingly, these substances are being ingested with cool drinks to induce a state of intoxication. What is particularly alarming is the fact that these drugs do not emit any discernible odor when consumed, making them easily concealable and accessible to impressionable youths within our community.
As an organization deeply committed to upholding the rights of all individuals, including consumer rights and the fundamental right to health, we are gravely concerned by this development. It is imperative that we address this issue promptly and decisively to safeguard the well-being of our youth and prevent further harm.
We remain resolute in our mission to combat illicit activities, protect vulnerable members of society, and promote a safe and healthy community for all

ππ§π Successful engagement that took place today between the Eastern Cape Human Rights And Missing Person Unit at Mdantsane Art Center and the Buffalo City Crime Fighters Forums. The discussions during the meeting were productive and fruitful, leading to a pledge of support from our Unit to the Crime Fighters Forums.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting is the upcoming training program scheduled to commence on the 1st of August 2024. This training initiative aims to equip over 400 Crime Fighters with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat crime effectively in our district and beyond.
The commitment and dedication of these individuals in their fight against crime is truly commendable, and we believe that through this training program, we can further empower them to make a significant impact in our community.
We would like to extend an invitation to anyone who wishes to support this initiative to come forward and join us in our efforts to create a safer environment for all. Your support and collaboration are invaluable in achieving our goal of reducing crime and promoting safety in our region.

π¨ππ§ Eastern Cape Human Rights and Missing Person Unit. Recently, we uncovered a fraudulent scheme targeting individuals in the East London and Mdantsane areas, specifically involving a 22-year-old African female. The suspect has been deceiving people by falsely guaranteeing them employment at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in exchange for a significant sum of R29,000 each. Regrettably, more than 20 victims have already been duped by this fraudulent activity, and we anticipate that additional cases will surface in the coming days.
On a positive note, I am pleased to report that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully apprehended the suspect in question. She is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Mdantsane Magistrate Court on Monday. However, in order to ensure a comprehensive investigation into this matter and to prevent future occurrences of such deceptive acts, we strongly encourage all affected individuals to come forward and provide their statements as soon as possible.
Thank you
Eastern Cape Human Rights And Missing Person Unit, together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), the Department of Employment and Labour, the Department of Home Affairs (Immigration Services), and the National Prosecuting Authority joined forces in a raid on an accommodation premises suspected to be a hub for illegal activities, specifically s*x trafficking and Trafficking In Persons.
During the operation, the team successfully gained access to the building and rescued six females aged between 20 and 32 who are believed to be victims of trafficking. It is our collective belief that these victims will play a crucial role in providing valuable information to help dismantle the trafficking network operating in the East London area.
This operation marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to combat trafficking in persons in the region. Notably, it is a follow-up to a previous operation conducted last year, where an underage victim was rescued, placed in a care facility, and eventually reunited with her family. We are optimistic that the information gathered from this recent operation will lead to further breakthroughs in our investigations.
The successful outcome of this operation has left all involved parties with specific tasks aimed at expediting the investigative process led by the DPCI. We are committed to following through on these tasks and ensuring that justice prevails for the victims and that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book.
Thank you π
