Trails & Ultrarunning
Gareth's race reports and other intresting information about his running
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a remarkable increase in people spending more time outdoors. From walking in green urban environments to hiking local trails right on our door steps, it’s been amazing to see people from all segments of society experiencing what nature has to offer and enjoying the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Salomon as an outdoor brand, would like to contribute to the continued momentum of this activity by hosting a series of hikes around the country aimed at encouraging people to gain more confidence through educating them on where to go, how to do it and what they need to get started.
Salomon Hike Club will kick off in early October with a selection of morning and afternoon activations around the country.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, numbers will be limited.
See the link below
https://salomonsports.co.za/pages/hike-club for more information and to secure your entry!
Your entry fee will cover your park fee for the day, with the remainder going towards the NPO’s who we support.

A new enjoyable route, minus the cows of course;) it was another hot year in the karkloof area. Overall I had a good run, a bit warm for me but soldiered on. Thanks to Karkloof Trail Series for hosting the event. Was great to get back to some normality and see everyone again.
Can't wait for this weekend! Bring on karkloof 100 miler
UTD 100+ miler in 3 weeks, the below is the route... I'm excited and a little nervous, its gonna be a great adventure Trails & Ultrarunning
And just like that it's over!, had an amazing time out there on the trails!.. the plan well there wasn't really one.. this was my long training run for Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg 2021 my main event for the year. That's the plan ;)
The event had 75 odd people and it was really great to see some familiar faces!! It's been that long since a race happened... craziness.
I must say I battled with the first 30 odd ks. The trail snakes and then the walkers and everything I between. That many people on the lap didn't play in my favor. I said to Ocean "I'm sore"... smaller running stance etc.
We had an amazing "storm" nothing better than running in the rain and cold. After about 40ks there was about half the people and things started to look promising!
I could run the way I wanted to run 🏃♂️ the pains disappeared, however my friend cramp came to say hi at one point.
Wet, muddy trails... I saw my a** a few times ;) and at one point I thought I was in a dam... but it's not Trail Running if you ain't falling.
I just woke up and there are 7 people left in the race, it's been raining all night so the trails are going to be muddy.... ill have to go for a jog later to see for myself...
All in all a well organized event for Karkloof Trail Series everyone I've spoken too had a lot of fun, im sure there are going to be some people hobbling this am.
But we not done we going to continue to camp and support the runners, with a few beers of course...
End result 10 laps (planned /unplanned) and one extra as there was no power so I couldnt have a hot shower. My 11th sweeper/,cooldown lap ;)
Thanks to Andrew Booth, Jack and the KZN Trail Running crew it was a great race.

Drakensberg Northern Trail 2020
DNT (Drakensberg Northern Trail 2020 ) - last race for the year and worth the wait, this part of the world is amazing.
It was great to see old friends and got to meet some of my strava buddies ;)
We started in mist, which was ok near the bottom of the mountain. As we climbed it got thicker and thicker, got lost a little on top and well going back and forth we realised we had the route on our GPS... ;)
Heading towards vulters pass, I came across a few of them sitting on a boulder waiting for us to have our last breath;).
Shew that is a climb up!
It was a great run and looking forward to ramping up training in the new year for UTD.
Super excited about Drakensberg Northern Trail 2020 DNT this Weekend, Some information below for those who dont know about the event
The 40km Mountain Marathon is the flagship event of the Drakensberg Northern Trail. The course poses a serious challenge as it traverses a vast diversity of terrain and vegetation. The first half of the route crosses the KZN/Freestate Border in a westerly direction. With the sun on your back and a Drakensberg panorama as a view, runners will wind their way along the ridgeline, crisscrossing through mountain peaks and sandstone valleys. The race reaches its highest point after a very steep and sharp climb at 2341m. A trig beacon marks this peak known by the local Freestate people as Baba Omkhulu (the big one who looks over). After summiting, the course goes into an off-trail section that links into some flowing trail and contours around Baba Omnthani (the small one who is watched over) to the top of Stoney Pass. Here is where runners will drop down into KZN and pick their way back via Drakensberg Greenfire Lodge that will serve as an aid station. The climb back up to the finish will test every participant..
The weather is looking a bit overcast with afternoon showers, i would say pretty good for running :)
See you soon KZN Trail Running
13 Peaks, the plan and didn't quite work out.
Left for CT bright and early Friday morning, with the plan to start the run in the afternoon.
The weather was well less than ideal with Capetown having heavy downpours the night before we arrived. Leaving signal hill and the rain still continued to come down.
The good thing about the rain and clouds is that hides my fear of natural hights. (Crazy i know).
Unfortunately Greg who i was running with rolled a ankle, I heard today he had x-rays and will have to see the surgeon on Monday so thats not great...
Anyways we finished off the day at 1130pm 30min before curfew.. so total of 30.4, an extra 5km due to route detours...
So I decided to start today, Matt said he would come and do 2 Peaks with me and then he had to shoot. Then I'll be solo and do what I needed to do.
Still cloudy but no rain we did them fairly quick. Said cheers to Matt and headed up to chappies. I have no idea where the wind came from but it was hectic.
Did chappies and almost got blown over ;)
Headed to the next peak but the wind was just getting stronger and eventually blew me off my feet.
I decided that being on the mountain alone and with the current conditions its not worth it. Safety first !
Called the run and headed back down chappies.
It was a awesome experience and had a great adventure. On the plus side I only have 5 Peaks to do when I come back
Just heard chappies is now closed due to the wind...
13 Peaks
Waterfalls are pumping with all the rain!
Mmmm so true

Magic day at the karkloof 100 miler.. helping out this time around:)
Nice SLR 45k down to the beach this am, and a few kms in the bush tomorrow 13 Peaks training runs... Just need some vert. Bring on November! PB vodka shots for Tash for her longest run
Dawn to Dusk 100 mile circuit race.(NEW PB FOR A 100 MILER) Well its now almost 1am the morning after my run and and I've just devowerd KFC the hunger is real!
Some info around this race, the plan was to route a 1km course 🐍. After consideration and the amount of turns involved we scrapped that idea and did a 500m loop, the course itself was measured with a measuring wheel and signed off, due to accuracy concerns with our GPS's.
Got to the GZ and it was getting real. Brad and I were the only two running as our running buddy MA was out of action do to injury unfortunately. In no time at all we headed off and started our jog. ( The plan work too a 100km and then relax a little for the remaining 61km)
The weather held out with only light drizzle, a little warm in day 2. While many would think running on a field is fairly easy, its not.. i was wearing trail shoes to help with the uneven surface.
Towards the end my feet were finished. It litterly felt like I was walking on razor blades. ( That many blisters) with a little motivation i was able to push though and have a jog in. When I got home took off the socks I was not surprised.;)
Basically my entire foot is one blister ;) Even this am I could hardly put pressure on them. Good news is I'm not stiff so once I sort out the blisters and bruising things should be come "normal".
Also got a PB on the run 22 hours 23min and 49 sec ;) which was great as im rather unfit due to lockdown.
Also a big thank you to everyone envolved especially Kloof school for giving us the opportunity to run, the event could not have gone ahead without you guys.
And then to all those that came to support Brad and I on our little adventure, a big thank you, you guys rock!
100km
