Proudly South African Handmade ShweShwe Napkins. Each napkin is made of a bright ShweShwe print. The napkins are sold in sets of 4 in the same color. The fabric is durable. The napkins need to be washed separately in cold water. No tumble drying. Steam Ironing.
Napkin size: 37,5cm x 37,5cm (141/2 x 141/2 inches)
Nothing is as beautiful as an African sunset. There is nothing as gorgeous as the warmth of the colors: orange, red, yellow, indigo, cerise.
The kaleidoscope of color is woven into the very fabric of my craft - ShweShwe.
ShweShwe originated with the arrival of indigo cloth from the far reaches of the globe in the countries of India and Holland.
Traditional ShweShwe fabric has a very unique scent and stiffness prior to washing. The treatment was used to protect the fabric against the elements when this cotton fabric was taken across the ocean in ships so many centuries ago. But when this material is laundered, it is amazingly soft.
Originally and still used for traditional ceremonies, this durable fabric has become increasingly popular in the making of garments, table linens, and other household items. I live at the southern tip of Africa and ShweShwe is a constant reminder that I live in the colorful and vibrant rainbow nation. We pride ourselves on our diversity but stand firm in our commitment to Ubuntu - our common humanity.
