Iโm talking about a species that has tenacity, endurance, unshakable will and never-say-die attitude; a small species that will tackle much larger adversaries, twist and turn out of their grasp, get up, even after a near-lethal blow, and continue the contest. Iโm talking about the ratel.
The ratel, commonly known in English as a โhoney badgerโ, has earned a reputation as one of the most tenacious and fearless creatures in the animal kingdom. Native to various regions of Africa, including South Africa, this small yet formidable mammal has captured the fascination of wildlife enthusiasts and researchers alike. At about the size of a medium dog, they are living examples of the saying โdynamite comes in small packagesโ.

The SF90 XX Stradale, Ferrariโs limited-series special edition, has set a record time at Fiorano for road-homologated cars.
The fastest ever lap of Fiorano by a road car was announced recently. Set by the 1030-cv SF90 XX Stradale, the new limited-series special based on the SF90 Stradale, the time of just 1โ17.309โ represents a new record for homologated road cars.
Driven by Raffaele de Simone, Ferrari Head of Development Test Driving, and equipped with lightweight carbon-fibre wheels and
Michelin Cup2R tyres, the time was 1.4โ faster than that set by the original car equipped with the Assetto Fiorano package and the same tyres.

Since the COVID pandemic in 2021, the hospitality industry has seen an increase in the number of establishments offering pet-friendly accommodation. During this time, many people found comfort and companionship in their pets - when either staying at, or working away from, home.
If like many animal owners, you consider your pet part of the family, you will carefully consider its needs and well-being when you plan trips or vacations. With an increase in pet-friendly establishments, you are no longer forced to leave your pet with a sitter. You can take your furkid along with you.
Pet-friendly hotels are normal hotels and, although there are fewer of them, the demand is increasing. It, therefore, is a good idea to book well in advance.

Kia Corporation and Hyundai Motor Company have unveiled the Universal Wheel Drive System called โUni Wheelโ.This paradigm-shifting vehicle drive system will revolutionise the design of future mobility devices.
Uni Wheel is a functionally integrated wheel drive system that dramatically improves available space inside an electric vehicle (EV) by moving the main drive system components to the vacant space within the wheel hub.
In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles power is transmitted from the engine through the transmission and to the wheels via drive shafts and constant velocity (CV) joints. In EVs, the engine and transmission are replaced by a motor and reduction gear, but the final method of transmission to the wheels is the same.

Some childrenโs stories are pretty Grimm, but Kleinmond craftswoman, Maret Hattingh, like a true Fairy Godmother, has conjured up a houseful of story-book characters to delight any childโs heart. It gives her as much pleasure to make them as to see the look on a childโs face as he clutches one close to him.
This all-consuming hobby started after she and her husband retired to Kleinmond in 2009, following a life-time of teaching, not in primary school and not in creative writing or art, but maths and science in high school! Although Maretโs mother had taught her to crochet at a young age, she had found count cross-stitching more challenging and over the years converted her skill into an art form.

Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse (L2L) Ladies Walk is a fundraising organisation dedicated to supporting various charitable causes through their coastal walks.
L2L first started their charity walks in 2006, and in some years even undertook two walks. Their main charity walk is the four-day, 100 km walk from the lighthouse at LโAgulhas to Danger Point lighthouse in Gansbaai, with shorter walks such as the Wednesday Walks bringing in additional funds. Since inception they have raised over R7.5 million and helped over 30 charities in the Overstrand.
The Village NEWS asked a few of these remarkable ladies to choose their favourite beach and tell us what appeals to them most.

The X-RIDER debuted in ISUZUโs D-MAX range as a limited-edition special-value model in 2016, and gained instant popularity. A year later, it was integrated into the standard line-up and has remained a top choice for bakkie enthusiasts wanting a capable vehicle that stands out from the crowd. One of the most appealing aspects of child-friendly and pet-friendly establishments is their settings - close to a welcoming beach or in a rural location surrounded by mountains and vineyards. And, with its mountains, lagoons, and white sandy beaches, it is safe to say that the Overberg has an abundance of spectacular venues.
Pet- and child-friendly restaurants acknowledge the value of companionship that extends beyond human connections to include our furry friends that, with their energy and loyalty, bring an added dimension to family life. Establishments that welcome families and their pets provide spaces where you can reconnect, enjoy a meal, and not feel bereft because a significant family member is missing out on quality time.

FoMo Fine Art Gallery combines gallery space flooded by natural light and an outdoor sculpture garden set among magnificent fynbos. The gallery has been spearheaded by the De Beer family who reside in the area and have been intimately involved in the art world for generations.
It officially opened its doors on 2 December, with over 300 art lovers attending the event, and since then has garnered considerable interest.
Nestled within the Kogelberg Biosphere it offers a unique experience. Not only will you find yourself blown away by the cool ocean breezes but also by the presentation of the sculptures that harmonise with the surroundings in an almost organic manner. Among them is โColossal Youthโ, a powerful sculpture which reflects the strength and majesty of the surrounding mountains.

The Real Youโs owner and founder, Dr Michelle Emett, began her journey into aesthetics when she enrolled to study medicine at Wits University. Lack of funds in her third year of study put her chosen future career at risk but her perfectionist nature saw her secure a bursary for the remaining three years of her degree. She graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
Dr Emett then spent the next year working at a private mining hospital where she received surgical training from the skilled Dr Jonathan Toogood, and on completion moved to Bristol in the UK where she worked as a doctor in the Accident and Emergency department. It was while in the UK that Dr Emett undertook her primaries (post-internship qualification), specialising in surgery.

The Groenberg Jukskei Klub from Sandbaai recently hosted a highly successful open day jukskei competition. This event attracted 32 teams from various clubs across the Western Province, as well as school teams from Hawston Primary and Mount Pleasant Primary. All participants were eager to win the valuable prizes up for grabs.
The event was hailed as the best of its kind ever held in the Overberg region. In addition to the intense competition, the players were treated to snacks and drinks during break, following a long-standing tradition. The chairman of the Groenberg Club, Willie Marais, and his team were accompanied by guests from the Hermanus Rotary Club at the opening ceremony. These guests included Chairman Brian Cain and his wife Lorraine, Ferdie and Annette Marais, Keith and Chris Beelders, Metcalf Fick, JJ Henn (principal of Hawston Primary School) and Lincoln Wildschut (principal of Mount Pleasant Primary) and his wife Bernadine. The meeting was dedicated to Sakkie du Toit, an 88-year-old long-time member of the club.
Willie Marais attributed the success of the events to the generous sponsorships received and urged all attendees to support these sponsors, whose names were displayed on boards throughout the day. The competition was fierce but ultimately the team consisting of Iranaeus van der Merwe, Theuns and Cecil le Roux, with captain Jaco Botes from Gansbaai, emerged as the winners in the A-section. The B-section was won by Worcester, while the ladies from Struisbaai claimed victory in the C-section.
Looking ahead, the Jukskei summer season will continue next year, starting on 13 January in Kleinmond. It is expected that the Kleinmond Open Day will receive enthusiastic support from jukskei players throughout the Overberg, Western Province, and Winelands Districts.

Mornรฉ de Wit, the pint-sized golfing prodigy from Kleinmond is still riding the wave of success. In May 2021, The Village NEWS published a story about this talented child with the good ball sense, eight at the time and causing a stir wherever he played. His coach, Andrรฉ Loots, the Pro at Arabella, predicted a bright future for him.
But as children grow older, many of them develop other interests and the single-minded commitment it takes to excel in a highly-competitive sport like golf begins to lose its appeal. This has not been the case with Mornรฉ, according to Dad, Divan, who also acts as his caddy. Every moment he can, heโs out there, either practising or competing. The practising mostly takes place at the Kleinmond Golf Club or at Arabella, with Coach Andrรฉ.
Recently, he was granted full membership of the Kleinmond Golf Club, which allows him to play to a handicap. This is important for his future development in the sport, as it will allow him to compete in the Western Cape division of the SA Kids Golf Competition.
Already Mornรฉ plays in two to three competitions per month, one of which is at the Devonvale Golf Club outside Stellenbosch. About 23 youngsters in his 9โ13 year age group from various clubs in the Western Cape compete against one another every month and last Sunday at the annual awards ceremony, Mornรฉ was declared the overall winner for 2023.
Next year he will be playing for Boland in the U13 category and one of the requirements is that the competitors play without a caddy (which means that Dad, Divan will be relegated to spectator status). Theyโre out there on their own pulling their own golf cart and showing what theyโre made of, without assistance or advice from anyone. They will play on various courses once a month throughout the year.
Now 10 years old, Mornรฉ is in Grade 6 at Laerskool Kleinmond and although he is doing well academically, Divan says that as he grows older, they will need to make sure that a balance is maintained between school work and his single-minded journey towards wearing the famous green jacket. Go for it Mornรฉ, we know you can do it!

Last Saturday, I went to an art exhibition in Hawston. The vibrant artwork that covered the walls was produced by children from the local primary and high schools who attend The Creative Space art classes. Each picture was so full of life that it almost jumped off the wall at you.
Talent galore was on display, but whether super-gifted or not, the children clearly had a lot of fun during the creative process. Vivienne Mitchley, who runs the NGO, and her team of full-time assistants are doing a wonderful job of encouraging the youngsters to express themselves freely, whilst exploring various visual art techniques. Almost without noticing, their confidence, concentration levels and self-discipline develop along the way.

We agree with Responsible Dog Owner's letter in The Village NEWS of 8 December. We spent our younger days in a dog shelter, being taken for short walks on short leads. So, it was utter bliss for us to be able to walk freely around the neighbourhood with our adoptive parents, stopping wherever we wished to sniff and smell.
We have no desire to walk on Blue Flag beaches, they are for humans not for dogs. It's a bit embarrassing having our poo picked up by our owners, but we've gotten used to it. How we love to chase each other through the waves on the far side of Grotto Beach. We only chase hadedas (because they make such an awful noise) but never guinea fowls or francolins, and obey our owners whenever they use a certain tone of voice.
We appreciate that Hermanus is as close to being in heaven as possible, but with all its rules it is fast becoming like a police state for us canine creatures. Please allow us to walk alone at our own pace without being yanked away from all the exciting smells on offer by having to walk at our ownersโ pace. We beg this of you.

The publicity around the official opening of the newly erected boxing club on the front page of The Village NEWS (1 December 2023) does justice to the determination and drive of Mzi Damesi, the founder and manager of the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club. It is important, though, to cover the initial history of the club, which is not known.
Until about 10 years ago, the Overstrand had a thriving Junior Town Council, which covered (through representation of all the high schools) all the areas that make up the Overstrand Municipality. One of the annual projects was for the Junior Town Councillors, who represented all geographical areas, to be provided by the Overstrand Town Council with a set amount. This allocation had to be used for the er****on of some concrete structure. One example was the er****on of the naming walls at the entrance to Hawston. Another project was the er****on of a skating ramp in Onrus.
As there was, at the time, a great need for a gym in Zwelihle, a huge container and a handsome collection of gym apparatus were obtained through the Senior Town Councilโs financial allocation to Zwelihle. The container was set up where the old taxi rank used to be. Mzi Damesi was approached to run the gym, which he did for years and with total dedication. Youngsters would queue every afternoon and wait patiently for their turn, at one rand per hour, to practise on the gym apparatus. This primitive gym worked well for years, until Mzi gradually and discreetly turned the humble gym into a thriving boxing club.
Well done, Mzi! The imposing Overstrand Whale Boxing Club, on the grounds of Waldorf School, is well deserved and a monument to the determination of the founder-manager.

Bridge Club raises funds for HAWS
Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), supported by the Hermanus Duplicate Bridge Club (HDBC), recently held their annual bridge drive at the Golf Club.
By all accounts the event was a resounding success, with friendly yet competitive bridge played by 60 players. Superb prizes were won, a lovely lunch was enjoyed and much-needed funds were raised.
The event was organised by the chairperson of HAWS, Pamela Quinn, and run by the chairperson of the HDBC, Ian Holdsworth.

Sadly, South Africa is a global leader in cybercrime, online scams and fraudsters are rife, so how do you recognise these big-time criminals?

Watching hot glass being moulded into a work of art is a fascinating experience. The first time Liz Jackson walked into a glass studio in Seattle while travelling in the USA, she was instantly captivated and knew she wanted to learn how to create glass art. โIt was love at first sight. I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do.โ
After returning to South Africa and completing a glass apprenticeship, she and husband David, opened their glass studio, Red Hot Glass, in Gauteng in 1990. They moved to Paarl in 2002, and just as the country went into the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, they started building their current home and studio in Fisherhaven. The workshop opened in 2021.

This year the Just Care After-School Centre in Mount Pleasant celebrated its eighth birthday. Somehow, it feels as if itโs always been there, fulfilling the vital role of providing a caring, safe environment for young children who formerly roamed the streets in the afternoons after school.
Just Care was established in 2015 as a Public Benefit Organisation by the Rathfelder Trust, in collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department and with the support of the Overstrand Municipality. Its purpose was to create an after-school centre in the largely disadvantaged community of Mount Pleasant to โcare for future generations by improving the value and quality of childrenโs livesโ.

At Bisque It, Hermanusโ latest addition to The High Street repertoire of arty activities, you can spend a relaxed three hours painting a figurine or piece of crockery.
On arrival, you select the piece of your choice โ be it a teapot, a serving plate or a figurine. From here I was assisted by Catherine Mangwana, who doubled as my waitress. She explained the process and how to use the various techniques available, which include dotting, scratching, stencilling and the bubble effect. Everything you need to dress your โnakedโ piece is included in the studio fee of R45.
Once you have selected the colours you want to use from a wide array displayed on shelves, you are given a tray with your paints, brushes and anything extra you might need to create special effects.

โThe Shine people teach me and make me smile.โ
So says Hermanus Waldorf School Grade 2 pupil, Meta Abamo, about the one-to-one support she and her classmates receive from the Shine Literacy programme that Enlighten Education Trust (EET) provides at their school.

This was thanks to more volunteers, but also because their reading skills improved so much.โ
