The Narrow Gate.
Its been a while but I'm sure you have found that developing something new takes time, experimenting, patience and yes, faith. The struggle to keep believing in yourself can at times be overwhelming but it's all I have... So this is the first in a new series in oil paint. I hope it touches some part of you.

A break in weather today saw me enjoying the storm clouds.

AN INTENSIVE FULL, 3 DAY RETREAT WORKSHOP in HERMANUS Western Cape, for newbies and those who have just taken up the lucious art of Oil Painting. Everything you want to know to start and further your skills: this course will leave you breathless and fully fit for a back to studio experience. We should complete at least 3 works and do multiple exercises during the 3 days.

SKIILS: Brushwork, application and colour palette and mixing
TECHNIQUES: impasto, blending, dry brush, glazing, alla prima.
We cover value, chroma and hue; light - chiascuro; warm and cool colours, depth perception; materials and more!
I SUPPLY: hand outs, cut board to do practice exercises, 3 brushes; all of my 20 years knowledge of oil painting;
Tea and coffee, snacks.

You supply:
Your oil paints, primer and list of materials that I will supply you with;
Your own lunch
Your sense of fun and joy.

Disclaimer: I will give you everything I have as an a teacher, however, I do not have a magic wand, and as with mastering any artform, it does take practice. Please be prepared to work hard, this is not a social paint and sip vibe. There are only 12 spots.
All the artwork featured in the post are my original works and demonstrations by me are a key part of the learning.

My son once reminded me of this world we all remember. Do you remember it?

In a world that is soon be filled with brilliant AI images of art, do we as artists still have a place? Do we fall into the stream, fast becoming a torrent river, or do we continue with our small and, compared to, feeble attempts at genuine mark-making? Do we rush to fill our world with soulless computer generated, imagined and determined images? Will we be left behind if we don't, forgotten? Is the ancient, truly ancient, art of scratching with charcoal on a surface, finally redundant?
If this is all so then the question has to be asked: does or can the AI generated work touch you deeply? Does it move you as work imbued with the human spirit does? Is an image just an image or is it the life behind the work that makes it least relatable and at best, elevating.

Fragile II.
Lest we forget how fragile we are. Inspired by the beautiful song by Sting. Smaller work 30x40 cm. Framed.

I learnt a couple of key things when painting flowers and mange to capture a feeling of vibrancy and light, I will share all these secrets, tips and techniques in this focus based project during an intense full day workshop.
