As a parent finding it difficult to explain what’s happening in Palestine and Israel to your child? 👧🏿👧🏾🧒🏿

The Muslim children books have put together a PDF book for all to download for free, with a child-friendly explanation of the current situation in Palestine, with Islamic and historical context.📚📚

The book suitable from ages 8+ .

Today is the last day of celebrating SA library week with LIASA. The week focused on telling powerful stories, while also placing a spotlight on the achievements of libraries in South Africa over the years, as libraries transform to fit into the “New World”.

The purpose is to contribute to the awareness of the important role that libraries play in a democratic society: advancing literacy, making the basic human right of freedom of access to information a reality, and promoting tolerance and respect among all South Africans.

The LIASA 2023 digital magazine showcases stories – how libraries have empowered and made a difference in people’s lives, why staff loves working for the library and their communities, what libraries have achieved, and what has been learned along the way. Link in my bio!

Today is the birthday of the late Gabriel García Márquez who, although winning the Nobel Prize in literature as an adult, struggled to read as a child.

That is, until a different kind of school opened in his hometown that used a different kind of method for reading, i.e. phonics.

The young Gabriel began learning to sound out letters (vs rote memorization of their names) and he quickly became enamored with books, finding one that "absorbed me in a very intense way."

And this experience, among others, shaped the rest of his life. As García Márquez puts it: "There is not a line in one of my books that does not have its origin in my childhood. During the first eight years of my life, I lived the experiences that later made up my poetic and literary creations. ... I would say that all my work has its origins in the early years of childhood."

So what was the schooling that García Márquez attended during such a formative time in his life, in which he says "studying was like playing"?

Montessori.

And later in life, García Márquez was a vocal supporter of the Montessori approach: "I do not believe there is a method better than Montessori for making children sensitive to the beauties of the world and awakening their curiosity regarding the secrets of life."

🙏❤️

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. 🔴

As children grow and become more curious, they require safe spaces in which to exercise their independence and build a positive relationship with the world around them. 🚸
We need to create environments where children have the freedom to safely live, play, learn, and grow.⛹️‍♀️🛝❤️

This weekend we will be by the children's area.

Bring the kids and let’s have fun day.

PSA: Some people DO NOT want physical contact even during the holidays. And sometimes people struggle with saying “no.”

In most cultures, there are images of people hugging, praying and cuddling blasted all over the media. Personally, I do not care for physical touch, especially when over stimulated. I always found holding hands uncomfortable since I am sensitive to others energy

That is why I opted out of the peace circle at my church for years. My mind quickly shut down in a room full of people, let alone singing or chatting, while holding hands.

Back in 2019, my family gathered for the Christmas blessing. I felt obligated to hold hands which made the situation awkward. At the time, I didn’t have the forefront or courage to say “no.” I also lacked the insight to ask to stand away from the group

Instead, I awkwardly shook and rocked the entire time. I found myself on the verge of tears while looking at the floor. Instead of letting go, a family member (who I won’t name) grasped my hand tighter. And at the end I heard, “you were very rude during the blessing.”

It was such a relief to finally eat. Still, this doesn’t make up for the fact that my actions were considered “rude.” What I wish happened is that my family released my hand and let me wander into a different room the moment they felt my hand shake.

Took a stupid walk for my stupid mental health today because I was grumpy AF and I know Gia will be nothing but joy and laughter after her Halloween party at school today. Intentional mindfulness, even if it's for 5 mins can help regulate your nervous system. I didn't want to take away her joy with my baditude. I fought going but I'm so happy I did. I feel much better and much more regulated.

Some quick ways to regulate:

⭐️ 3 senses exercise and deep belly breaths: Notice 3 things you can see, hear, and touch. (ie: I see the trees have red leaves now. I see two kids playing on the slide. I see ducks swimming in the pond) This helps you stay present and keeps you from ruminating on your anxiety or worries.

⭐️ Comeback: When you catch yourself being caught up in worries about the future or guilt and regret about the past, just notice that it is happening and simply and kindly say to yourself or aloud, “Come back.” Then take a calming breath and focus on what you are doing right now.

⭐️Let it out: Sometimes you just gotta the thoughts out of your head. Use voice notes and say whatever you need to say...no filter. Once done, take some deep breaths and then delete it. It's probably not something you want to ever hear yourself say out loud, so to keep from judging yourself harshly later, delete it and let it go.

Drop your quick mindfulness tips in the comments so we can help each other out.

The United Nations has proclaimed the period 2022-2032 as an international decade of indigenous languages in the hope of building a global community for the preservation, revitalization, and support of indigenous languages worldwide.

Fun fact 🤓

It should be noted that SA has about 34 historically established languages of which 30 are living languages and four Khoikhoi languages that are extinct. These languages are hardly used in classrooms, on television, on the radio, and even in social spaces.

It is up to us as parents, aunts, teachers, grandparents, neighbors, and the community at large to remedy language extinction by preservation, promotion, and
development.

Let's start them young to create an interest in learning a new language or writing and spelling in their home language.
We want more thesis, in our home languages 😂

“Almost two-thirds of South Africa’s children are facing their mental health problems alone; avoiding help or treatment when they need it most. “

Nurturing and loving care build a strong foundation, helping children to develop the social and emotional skills they need to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
