A bit late to post, but a HUGE congratulations to Anita Haltmann and her wonderful Voigtskirch Orion, placing second in the Adult 1* Gauteng Eventing Champs.
This horse is such a pleasure to work with, and so expertly conditioned by Anita, to perform at this level.
Clever boy Orion! 🥰

Some food for thought in the midst of this crazy heat wave, after I sweated my body weight whilst treating today 🥵

I see so many people bringing their horses in early “to get them out the heat”. I treat in a lot of different stables, and I can assure you that the vast majority are MUCH hotter inside, than it is outside.
Although your horse is out of the sun, most stables do not have great through drafts (no fault of the horse or yard owners), which means the horses spend the whole afternoon sweating in stagnant heat in their stables, with no option of relief.
Fans are a huge help in stables, but many yards do not have this option. You simply need to go and move around in your horse’s stable for a few mins to see how quickly you start to sweat!

In most cases, your horses are far better off having a hose down and going back outside where there is at least a bit of a breeze. Wind chill factor is a real thing!
Always remember to make sure that your horse has some option of shade in the paddock, with an adequate supply of cool, fresh water!

Amanda and her two lovely steeds having a super show at the Kuda KPC Festival.
I’ve been working with Lotsky and Chix for a long time now, and it so wonderful to see the results of all the hard work. Their mom is so dedicated with their work programmes and exercises, and they’re on a routine monthly physio programme.
Special ponies ❤️

A huge achievement for and Savoy Affair, jumping their first Grand Prix today.
And of course they had to celebrate by sharing a Savanna 😉

Thank you for trusting me to look after this special horse whilst he’s in jhb ❤️

MUZI FEELS SON OF RAJ HAS A "MASSIVE" CHANCE

David Thiselton

Son Of Raj led in by Steven Chetty and family after winning the WSB SA Derby (JC Photos).
Muzi Yeni Feels Son Of Raj Has A “Massive” Chance
Generally the further the race the better Weiho Marwing-trained horses do, so the 14/1 odds of Son Of Raj might not be as cramped as they first appear.

The Duke Of Marmalade gelding impressed when kicking away from the field from a handy position off a slow pace to win the Gr 1 WSB Derby over 2450m by a comfortable 2,25 lengths from Billy Bowlegs.

That followed a three length romp in the Listed 4Racing Derby Trial over 2000m.

However, he only carried 55,5kg in the Derby Trial and the SA Derby field’s merit ratings ranged from 78 up to 114, so was hardly a vintage renewal.

Son Of Raj himself was only rated 81 when lining up for the Derby.

So it seemed he had been put in his place when running a 6,55 length eighth in the Gr 1 Daily News 2000, in which there were four runners rated in the 120’s.

However, a look at the replay shows him dropping out to the back from a wide draw, whereas his best runs have come from handy positions.

He also did make some late progress.

It was his first run on the Hollywoodbets Greyville turf.

His official HDJ gallop was not overly eyecatching, but Yeni said, “He’s a nice, strong, sound horse. He was a little bit reluctant to gallop. He races with blinkers and today he didn’t have his normal headgear on. So, with the grandstand and all those boards, he was doing a lot of looking around. But that’s why we bring them here as well … to make sure they know what’s going on.”

Asked whether he felt he might lead, he replied, “It depends on the pace. You can’t say you are going to lead when you have horses like Dave The King who was going as hard as he did last time (in the Daily News 2000). You can’t be cutting throats.”

Muzi said he would “use his experience” after they had jumped.

By that he meant a few early split second decisions would be made on the racing instinct he had gained from more than 21,500 career rides.

Asked whether he was happy with the draw of nine, he replied, “Yes, I’m happy with the draw. Sometime you’re drawn too well and sometimes you’re drawn too wide. Smack down the middle I can assess the race, see what’s going on on my inside and can see who is coming across from the outside, so I will be able to judge it more easily from that draw.”

Asked whether he thought he had a chance, he said, “I think he must have a massive chance with a light weight and he stays very well. Obviously healthy respect for the favourites, horses like See It Again, Without Question and Safe Passage.”

Weiho Marwing learnt the ropes from the masterful Ormond Ferraris and will likely have Son Of Raj as fit as a fiddle and at his absolute peak.

The Marwing-trained Wylie Hall was first across the line in 2014, but was controversially demoted after an upheld objection.

Wylie Hall came into the July off an identical preparation to Son Of Raj, winning both the Derby Trial and SA Derby before running in the Daily News. The only difference was he ran a close 0,25 length fourth (to Vercingetorix) in the Daily News.

There will be a massive Durban celebration if Son Of Raj wins as he will become the first Indian-owned winner of the July.

He is owned and was bred by Steven Chetty.

The final field is out, and it’s official- Son of Raj is going to the HSB Durban July!
I really have not been able to think about much else for the last week 😂
Running against some big names in this field, but he has all the heart, and Mr Marwing can certainly train a stayer!

My Raj- I will be standing trackside and screaming my heart out boy. You got this! 🧡

It’s clipping season! ❄️

Which means it’s also time for my annual appeal to clients to consider leaving a saddle patch on your horses.
I’m sure all the ladies know the feeling of stockings/ leggings rubbing on leg hair that’s growing out- now imagine the friction of a numnah and saddle moving on a horse’s clipped back!
I’ve experienced time and again horses who usually have little to no back pain, suddenly become very fascially tight and sore after clipping.
Leaving a small saddle patch prevents a lot of discomfort for your ponies!

The most phenomenal weekend learning from the legendary Dr Kevin Haussler.
I’ve been truly blessed to study under some of the best vets and physiotherapists in SA and the world, and I’m forever grateful for opportunities like this.
A huge thank you to for organising this symposium- can’t wait for the next one!

Rest softly, biggest dinosaur horse 🖤

You were so very, very loved, and you’ll be missed by many. Grateful for all our quiet moments together during treatments.
I’m so sorry for your loss, but well done for making the tough call and doing right by your boy.

Son of Raj showed his quality in spades today with a BIG win in the Group 1 SA Derby.
This is my first Group 1 winning patient, and I can’t quite describe the feeling.
A huge thank you to for the honour of working with this horse, and a very well done to the Marwing team and owner Mr Chetty.

Interesting!
This is a screenshot from one of ’s webinars with Solange Mikail.
The picture shows thermography images of a distal limb immediately after icing.
The image on the left was iced with “fancy” ice boots, and the image on the right with crushed ice.
It’s blatantly obvious which was more effective. Sometimes simple is better!
All my clients would have heard my rant about how you should be icing with ACTUAL ice 😉

So many times yes!
A horse needs to be STRONG before being able to truly collect.
Young horses just starting out are not strong, the same way toddlers just learning to walk are not strong.
Shortcuts only get you to the wrong place, faster 👌🏼

As many of you know, my rescue pooch Cheza has bilateral hip dysplasia.
Although I am always managing it from an exercise and strengthening point of view, sleeping has always been a bit of an issue for her in terms of comfort.
Even the most expensive commercial beds, which most dogs would love, had her waking up pretty stiff and sore.

This morning we received her orthopedic bed, and it looks like she approves! They’re affordable, washable, comfortable, and bonus- very aesthetic as well! I’m so grateful that my girl can now have a comfortable night’s sleep. Now just to add her fleece blanket 😉
