Nelson Mandela, a champion of environmental stewardship and social justice, eloquently emphasised the wonders of nature and our profound responsibility to protect it. โ
โ
He wisely recognized that the preservation of our natural world is intricately linked to building a better future for humanity. He envisioned protected areas as hubs for innovative solutions, fostering a more equitable and sustainable world. โ
โ
By safeguarding these natural treasures, we can unlock new opportunities for sustainable development, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation. Mandela emphasised that we must recognise that protected areas are not mere sanctuaries, but dynamic centres for solutions, where humanity and nature can thrive together in harmony.

Today is Rain Forest Day! ๐ฟ Celebrated annually on June 22, this day highlights rainforests and their critical role in safeguarding our future on this planet, showcasing innovative and emerging solutions for their protection, and inspires individual and collective actions around the world for holistic forest impact.
Rainforests are home to endemic plant and animal species. By protecting rainforests, we protect these biodiversity hotspots. Happy Rain Forest Day!

African youth are the future of conservation efforts in the continent. They will inherit the natural resources and protected areas that the previous generations have worked so hard to preserve. By involving them in conservation efforts, they can learn about the importance of conservation and develop the skills and knowledge needed to continue to protect these areas in the future.
Conservation efforts can have significant benefits for young people in Africa. By preserving natural resources and wildlife habitats, conservation efforts can help to create opportunities for ecotourism, which can generate income and employment opportunities for local communities.
In commemoration of National Youth day this June 16th, we celebrate our young environmental advocates that have been in action to save planet earth.
This occasion reminds us of the pivotal role that young people play in shaping the future and highlights the importance of empowering them to become catalysts for positive change. Furthermore, it reinforces the importance of the youth voice in bringing forward their ideas and perspectives as future leaders, stakeholders and contributors in the economy and environment.
We would like to honour our young environmental advocates who have embraced their youthfulness in the climate sector.
Tipping Points episode 22 was focused on Values vs Value: should biodiversity have to pay its own way? Biodiversity is the variety of Earthโs terrestrial, freshwater, and marine organisms, as well as the ecosystems of which they are part.
Biodiversity is crucial to the future of all life on the planet and is also the foundation for the ecosystem goods and services that enable human societies to thrive. Biodiversity provides us with food, water, and materials, as well as services such as climate regulation, pollination, disaster protection, and nutrient cycling.
The National Biodiversity Economy Strategy promotes the sustainable use of natural resources as a means to both conserve biodiversity and create jobs.

The global conservation community has led a contemporary worldwide movement to elevate the youth voices in conservation. In line with this movement, Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation (OGRC) recognises the need to forge and strengthen a meaningful relationship between young people and nature.
OGRC'S commitment to this initiative is demonstrated in many of its efforts, including various research and leadership programmes as well as the inclusion of young people at the Oppenheimer Research Conference (ORC).
Empowering the next generation to become environmental leaders and champions!
Join us as we explore innovative strategies to inspire and mobilize young people to take action on environmental issues. From interactive education programs to community-based initiatives, we'll discuss effective ways to spark and sustain environmental interest and action among youth.
Together, let's make young blood run green and shape a sustainable future for all! Register - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tipping-points-ep-23-tickets-916126307447

Today we celebrate World Environment Day. We are reminded of our collective duty to protect the planet, celebrating progress while compelling meaningful actions to preserve nature for future generations. This day reminds us to be good caretakers of nature. It allows us to reflect on worrying facts, like over 7 million people dying from pollution each year. But it also gives hope that together we can solve big problems.
The day inspires us to make changes, big and small, from recycling to mobilizing action on climate change. It renews our faith that people can come together for forests, oceans, and wildlife. By uniting on World Environment Day, we look forward to a future where nature and humans thrive side by side.
As South Africans head to the polls, the future of our planet hangs in the balance. The decisions we make at the ballot box will have far-reaching consequences for the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations.
Will they prioritize the protection of our precious natural resources, or succumb to the interests of big business and polluters? Will they take bold action to address the climate crisis, or merely pay lip service to this critical issue?
Let's delve into the conservation and climate and environmental manifestos of political parties and explore their vision for a sustainable tomorrow.
What environmental policies are guiding your vote?
As we celebrate Africa Day, let us remember the rich natural heritage that makes our continent so unique. Let us recommit to protecting our precious wildlife, preserving our breathtaking landscapes, and promoting sustainable development for the benefit of all Africans and future generations.
Let us pledge to be responsible stewards of our environment, to protect our ecosystems, and to promote eco-friendly practices that ensure a healthy and thriving planet for all. Happy Africa Day!
If youโve ever been brave enough to get up close to a bee, you may have noticed three black dots on the top of its head. These are eyes! Who knew?
In addition to two large compound eyes on either side of its head, a bee has three โsimpleโ or โocelliโ eyes on the top of its head. These ocelli detect light (but not shapes), meaning that a bee can sense if it is being approached from above by a predator.
The two large compound eyes either side of its head are made up of lots tiny lenses that each piece together a wider image of what the bee can see. They specialise in seeing patterns, which can help identify plant types and other bees.
๐๐ฟ On International Biodiversity Day, let's reflect on the vital link between nature and prosperity.
South Africa's call for public comments on its updated Biodiversity Economy Strategy aligns with global goals, aiming to conserve biodiversity while fostering economic growth and inclusivity.
How do you think, we can best tackle the challenges of preserving our natural heritage, while also promoting economic growth, particularly in Africa, where many countries have pressing development needs?
Read more about the strategy and contribute your thoughts: https://ogresearchconservation.org/south-africas-conservation-model-why-expanding-the-use-of-biodiversity-to-generate-money-is-a-good-idea/ .
World Biodiversity Day is a joyful reminder of the incredible variety of life on Earth and the urgent need to protect it.
Jive had the opportunity to support the exciting work of Dr. Hayley Clements and a team of over 200 researchers across the African continent!
After four years and $150,000 in funding from OGRC, they've unveiled a stunning map of biodiversity across sub-Saharan Africa, showing human impact on over 50,000 species. Jive proudly collaborated with the team to write articles about the project and its underlying concepts, and to build the website that now hosts this groundbreaking map, making it accessible for all to explore and use.
Accurate and up-to-date information is at the core of this project. But by providing access to such data and knowledge resources, individuals and organisations are supported to make informed decisions and take meaningful actions to protect and sustainably manage our natural world.
Let's use this fantastic network and body of knowledge to protect our precious ecosystems and guide its use, sustainably.
