Happy Grenache Day!
Grenache favours warm climates and thrives in South African regions such as Swartland, Piekenierskloof and Stellenbosch.
Though plantings of this variety make up less than 1% of the vineyard plantings in South Africa, there are roughly 50 producers of single varietal grenache noir. Many of these are made from old vines.

South Africa reports some of the highest rates of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, resulting in a notable prevalence of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
FASD is caused by prenatal alcohol use and refers to abnormalities in the foetus (unborn baby). The World Health Organisation estimates that the national FASD prevalence rate in South Africa might be as high as 11%. The global rate is less than 1%. Based on this an estimated 5 million South Africans might have FASD.
South Africa Wine is a proud member of Aware_ZA. We promote and support the responsible use of alcohol.

We support research, development and innovation in the viti- and viniculture sphere. Read our latest research article on minerality not being linked to soil type.
This study aimed to explore the concept of minerality by analysing 16 542 Chablis Premier Cru tasting notes from CellarTracker, spanning from 2003 to 2022. The analysis was paired with data on weather, topography, and soil from the Chablis area to assess whether consumer wine notes support any existing theories about the source of minerality.

We support research, development and innovation in the viti- and viniculture sphere. Read our latest research article on mycorrhizal fungi and vine performance.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are an integral part of the rhizosphere and assist with nutrient uptake in plant roots, making them an attractive option for use as biofertilisers. This Washinton State University (USA) study evaluated commercially available strains and local inoculants for their effects on root growth, colonisation and nutrient uptake using living field soils in pot experiments.

Groot Constantia is appealing to the public to assist in the search for their recently stolen 300-year-old brass bell.
The 110kg bell dates back to 1716 is about 30 to 35cm in height and width and is notable for its green discolouration. It was reported stolen from the Hoop op Constantia homestead, declared a National Monument by the minister of education in 1984.
Acting CEO of Iziko Museums, Bongani Ndhlovu, said that the theft of heritage objects was a serious criminal offence that continued to rob South Africans of irreplaceable national assets. “These valuable objects help us understand and recognise our past and contribute to creating an inclusive South Africa,” Bongani concluded.
We urge you to contact Groot Constantia on 021 794 5128 if you have information that can lead to the recovery of the bell.
