Welcome to innovateHER 2024, an inspiring initiative hosted by the North-West University Business School. Our programme is designed to empower young women (ages 15-25) to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), fostering a new generation of innovators and leaders.
Programme Overview
InnovateHER is a comprehensive 12-week online course that combines technical training with personal development. Our goal is to equip participants with the skills and mindset needed to excel in STEM fields and entrepreneurial ventures.

What You Will Learn
The innovateHER programme is divided into three key phases, each designed to build on the skills and knowledge gained in the previous phase:
Phase 1: Understanding and Ideation (Weeks 1-5)
Design Thinking: Learn to empathize with problems, define them clearly, ideate possible solutions, and prototype and test your concepts.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Identify and address a problem related to the SDGs.
Phase 2: Technical Skill Acquisition (Weeks 6-8)
Artificial Intelligence: Learn how to use AI tools to augment your abilities and enhance your projects.
Mobile App Development: Understand the components of an app, the Agile Development Process, user stories, computational thinking, and User Experience Design.
Low Code/No Code Development: Turn your ideas into functional digital products with minimal coding.
Phase 3: Entrepreneurial Focus (Weeks 9-12)
Financial Literacy: Gain essential knowledge to manage your finances and make informed economic decisions.
Business Model Canvas: Develop a business model for your solution.
Pitching Skills: Hone your skills in presenting your business idea to potential investors.
Personal Development Track
Throughout the programme, participants will engage in a concurrent personal development track designed to foster growth and resilience. Weekly themes include:
Finding Purpose: Align your personal mission with your project.
Mindfulness: Techniques to manage stress and maintain mental health.
Resilience: Strategies to overcome challenges and setbacks.
Effective Communication: Improve teamwork, presentations, and business negotiations.
Benefits of Participation

Mentorship and Networking: Connect with mentors and industry leaders.
Global Exposure: Winners receive an all-expenses-paid educational trip to Europe.
Impact on SDGs: Work on projects that address global challenges and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Participation Rules
Team Composition: Entries can be individual or in teams of 2-3. At least one of the team members should identify as female.
Teacher Participation: A teacher may enter with more than one team from the same school. Minors must enter with a teacher who is willing to mentor the team during the programme and travel with the winning team as a guardian.
Parental Consent: Signed consent must be given by the parents/legal guardians for participants to take part in the competition and all related activities.
Travel Requirements: Winners must be in possession of a valid passport by 10 January 2024 to travel. If they cannot travel at the time, they will forfeit the prize.
Adjudication: The decision of the adjudicators is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
Intellectual Property: The NWU will not use or share any ideas or IP without the consent of the entrants.
How to Participate
Register: Entries open on 1 June 2024. Ensure you register early as spots are limited.
Engage: Participate in weekly sessions and complete assignments to enhance your skills.
Compete: Develop innovative solutions and compete for the grand prize, including the educational trip to Europe.

🥇 First Prize - Prizes to the value of R 500,000: Isabel Strauss & Tamika Govender have taken the lead with their groundbreaking mobile app. This genius innovation provides self-diagnosis information, bridging the gap caused by medical staff shortages and empowering individuals to be more health-conscious. Their contribution aligns perfectly with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
🥈 Second Prize - Prizes to the value of R 250,000: Laurette Strauss & Leila Graham impressed us with their app that seamlessly links users to short-term job opportunities. By fostering experience and reliability while streamlining financial transactions, they're fueling employment and bolstering economic growth. Their vision aligns splendidly with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
These solutions are not just innovations, but crucial steps towards a brighter future. Kudos to everyone involved!
