Easter is next week so I am sharing this cute Easter rabbit art activity. I presented it to the 4-5 year olds. I love to make my art activities as complex as possible to encourage the development of as many skills as I can. This activity required perseverance, following instructions and a sequence, fine motor skills with drawing, painting and cutting, patterning with the border and gross motor skills with the painted background. The children loved their pictures and they made a delightful Easter display in the classroom. If possible its best to do this art activity using A2 paper for the background and A4 paper for the rabbits. If you are limited with space and resources the rabbits on their own are a perfect activity.

Birthday chart ideas.

Welcome to 2024. I wish you all a happy and successful year teaching. When I was teaching I liked to have a birthday chart in my classroom. The children feel special seeing their name on the chart. And of course feel very important when you all sing happy birthday to them on their special day. When I was teaching two things frustrated me with a birthday chart. Children leaving and new children arriving. So I prefer a birthday chart that you attach the child’s name and date using presstick so it can be removed if they leave. And then make extra so you have them ready to add when a new child joins your class.

I have a fully prepared theme on Summer with all the lessons for a week. This theme and 43 other themes are available to order on the web site www.preschoolthemes.co.za. Each theme costs R60 excluding postage.

Dare I say Christmas is not too far away and with the end of year being such a busy time its a good time to start thinking about and planning for the many fun creative activities around this theme. We made these paper plate Christmas trees last year and they made a great classroom display. I like to make my creative activities as complex as I can to use a variety of skills. This activity uses cutting, drawing, collage, painting, fine motor skills, planning, following instructions and perseverance to complete the activity.
I cut a large paper plate into three sections( triangles) for the tree for each child. The children cut snips into the edge of the sections and pasted the pieces to an A3 paper to create a tree shape. They painted the tree and added sparkly collage materials and a star at the top of the tree. For gifts under the tree I gave the children rectangles of cardboard folded in half and the children drew "gifts" in the presents which were pasted under the tree. A great hint is to add glue to the green paint so the collage materials will stick to the painted tree. I saw this idea on Instagram. Such a great activity to keep several children busy with inexpensive materials. This fits well with the theme of me and my body, sport, keeping healthy,opposites or just for a fun activity. The link to the original idea is in the photo.

Learning at preschool should always be fun and through play. Many skills need to be practiced to be ready for the formal learning of primary school. It can be a challenge to find fun ways to present these skills and without spending a lot of money on resources. Fathers day is coming up in June so here are a few ideas to give you some inspiration and to be super organised with your materials😁. These are not my own ideas. I have taken them from my Pinterest board for Fathers Day.

A few activities to do with the theme of fruit. These are not my own ideas. I have taken them from my pinterest board. Pinterest.nz/kstedall/fruit/. I was asked for some activities to do for the theme of opposites. It’s quite a big theme but a fun one to do. Select five age appropriate opposites to do for the week and focus on one each day. Examples are soft and hard, under and over, stop and go, up and down, day and night, happy and sad, big and small…. And many others. These ideas are from Pinterest and are not my own ideas. I have added comments under each activity to explain each one.

Welcome back to Term 2 and that means lots of themes that need ideas, activities and planning. Colourful tissue paper Easter eggs. These eggs look lovely displayed on a window with the light shining through the tissue paper. For this activity there is quite a bit of teacher preparation but it is really worth the effort. The teacher needs to cut an egg shaped oval from cardboard and paste it to wax wrap (the paper used for wrapping sandwiches purchased from the supermarket) and cut off the excess. Cut tissue paper into squares and separate the pieces as best as you can. ( don't use crepe paper it doesn't work). The children start off by drawing patterns on the cardboard frame using wax crayons. The children apply some glue to a small area of the egg and place pieces of tissue paper onto the egg overlapping some of the pieces. Continue until the egg shape is filled with colourful tissue paper squares. An extra coat of glue may keep it nice and flat. We pasted pretty pastel coloured feathers onto the tissue paper but its not essential.

Easter basket using a paper plate with Easter eggs. I love this activity as it has lots of components and uses many different skills. The teacher needs to prepare the paper plate basket ( see photo) and cut the Easter egg shapes. The children draw patterns on the eggs using khoki pens or crayons. Do this before painting while their hands are still clean. The children paint the basket brown and paste pieces of brown paper strips to create the basket texture. Add glue to the paint so it will stick. The children paste the Easter basket to some paper and paste the eggs into the basket opening. Add grass using pieces of crepe paper streamers or cut green paper strips.

With Easter not far away its time to start planning some Easter activities. We made these rainbow rabbits and I loved the end results as much as the children did. I did this activity with the 4-5 year olds. I used the child's hand to draw the body of the rabbit and they drew the ears and filled in the face features. We used a black koki pen but wax crayons are also effective. The children cut out their rabbits and pasted them to a painted background. The background was made by painting stripes of colour using pastel paints ( white paint with a tiny bit of each colour to make a range of pastel paint colours). Optional: We created a border using orange paper snipped into smaller squares and pasted around the edge. I hope you will try this activity.
