RHD update: Those of you on my FB will have read that the Bunny Haven lost our first rescued and relocated Feral colony last week to RHD. 86 rabbits in 2 days. These rabbits were my first colony work, and we did a lot of learning and studying on them. They were on a farm just outside Groot Brak. We caught them between 2017 and 2018, all were sterilised, the whole colony rehabilitated and released into a safe, covered camp of over 1ha. And in the whole time till LAST week we had just 6 pass. They were there over 5 years.
In 2 days all except 2 that shows no signs, have passed.
Over 500 rabbits have now passed in the Garden Route area in about 3 weeks, when it started in Knysna.
We have 6 feral camps left. Over 500 rabbits still.... and the Haven just over 300. A total of 28 rabbits inside the Haven has now been vaccinated.
We are closed for intake, we have extreme measures in place, and we will do our best we can. We have rounded in the remaining feral colonies into smaller spaces too where no other animals including rats can come in, however we do still have flies in the area even with this cold.
We are doing our utmost to contain the virus at the infected site.
The caretakers who so generously sponsored their ground is also devastated. All the animals have been burried, 1.5m + deep, with building chalk, on the caretakers' private property.
State vet George, Leana has been notified, according to law.
Please report any sudden or weird deaths, or areas where you see many rabbits and hares dead. This is of utmost importance to help us save and protect our wildlife species, of which we have 4 in the direct area (2 species of indigenous hares, and 2 species of indigenous rabbits)
This RHd outbreak has hit hard last week, and I needed time to get calmer and process all that happened before I could post, although all the relevant authorities were notified immediately. I think what caught me most was the fact that I could not even help the bunnies myself - many of whom I hand raised. I could not go and greet. I had to stay away, for the sake of all the other bunnies depending on me. They were a feral colony, but always came running when I visited and called. My skin has blisters from the amount of F10 I used in the last week, because I did visit the area, but have not been in direct touch with the rabbits. I feel guilty of missing them last Monday, when I was supposed to visit, because of exteeme rain and wind... but greatful that I have not been in contact with them. (We visited every 2 weeks to check them ourselves). Our car get "tyrebaths" before we enter the premisses here at the Haven, and similar measurements is being done by the caretakers and groundowners of the other colonies. We will have to ride it out and see that this surge die down again, and avoid the areas of death.
We seriously need funds to vaccinate more or our special bunnies in the Haven. I have set up a fundraiser, just waiting for it to be cleared. 26 bunnies in the haven has been vaccinated, (+ 2 outside) albeit 18 belongs to other people, and the other 6 has been sponsored, thank you so much!
Thank you to dr Jade at Eden Small Animal Hospital for Vaccinating this lot pictured below, for us. We took a pick just before we covered them with a blanket sprayed with Pet Remedy to keep them calm for the trip.
Rides cause stress, thus glucose counts may be high or abnormal and not accurate when arriving at the vets, we do not do glucose, but we do make sure our bunnies are calmed all the way.
Thank you Iris Klimczuk that I can press on you at all hrs for extra info while we take on this new horror. Thank you for all the extra info and help.
And to my hubby and small group of friends... thank you for letting me pack it off, for just being there the whole of the last week while I cried my eyes out, collapsed, got depressed... and helping me to stabelize with your kindness. It was the hardest thing ever to hear "they have all passed". I wish this on no one. I know I always say... you learn from experience, this was one experience I did not need.
Giving bunnies meds can be a real mission ๐ these methods are definitely super helpful ๐ค

Currently there are 37 Vetโs involved in getting the RHDV vaccine at their respective practices.
As the vaccine is currently not a registered vaccine in SA, it will be imported via the section 21
It is critical these vaccines get to multiple vet practices country wide to reduce the spread of the disease and as such it is important that the public chat to their local vets or vet of choice and ask if they are part of the RDHV vaccine chat and planning on having vaccines at their practice.
If your local vet is unsure where to start or get involved, please request that they get in touch with any of the following exotic vet practices.
Sunninghill Village Veterinary Clinic-Village Vet Group
Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic
Cape Exotic Animal Hospital
They will then be added to the vaccine communication channel.
The are many benefits to having more vets ordering vaccines:
1) Distribution and availability of the vaccine countywide will benefit bunny owners in more remote areas.
2) The more vaccines imported will reduce the shipping cost per unit.
3) Creates more awareness about the RHDV virus which will assist in saving our Riverine Rabbit.
The vet practices will post RHDV surveys on their pages, please only complete the survey at the practice you plan to get your bunnies vaccinated at.
The survey is for the vets to gauge how many vaccines they need to have at their respective practice.
So if you would like a vet close to you to obtain the vaccine, ask them to get in touch.
