Runners of all levels can benefit from adding yoga to their regular cross-training routines. The physical and mental components of yoga can help you build muscle, prevent injuries and other health complications, and boost your focus—to name a few.

Running impacts your joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons in a big way. If you only choose to run for exercise, it can lead to injury and imbalance.

Yoga, on the other hand, increases your range of motion and helps you build mental focus, endurance, and mobility.

We have great " yoga for runners " series on yoga connect. You can sign up for our 2 week free trial to gain access today.

What is Yin Yoga and what are it's main benefits?

Yin yoga is a style of yoga that includes specific passive poses (called yin poses) that are held for an extended time, usually 3 to 10 minutes.

Yin yoga works deeply into our body with passive, longer-held poses.

Yin yoga targets your deep connective tissues, like your fascia, ligaments, and joints. It’s slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body.

By stretching and deepening into poses, we’re opening up any blockages and releasing that energy to flow freely.

Yin yoga also requires conscious and controlled breathing, often emphasized by relaxed belly breathing. This intimate practice encourages yogis to connect with their physical self, emotions, and sensations.

We have some wonderful Yin classes on Yoga Connect. To have a browse of what we have to offer, go to www.yogaconnect.co.za and sign up for our 2 week FREE TRIAL.

Achieving Inner Peace .... Is it even possible in our modern day society?

Inner peace is possible, and you don’t need to meditate on a mountaintop or break the bank for a wellness retreat in order to find it.

Your breath is always with you, and both yoga and meditation practices harness the power of breath control to help shift your state of mind.

There are several ways of enhancing one’s inner peace and happiness. Below, we list three simple ways to help achieve inner peace and happiness goals.

1. NATURE
Spend time in nature absorbing all it has to offer.

2. MEDITATE
Find time to meditate

3. GRATEFUL
Be grateful for all you have in life

“The pursuit of inner peace is more important than the search for happiness or success.”
-Chris Shea

The goal of meditation isn’t to clear your thoughts, but instead to learn how to observe your wandering thoughts as they pass, without any judgement.

In a guided meditation, an experienced teacher leads you through the meditation practice step by step, usually focusing on a particular technique (perhaps breathing exercises, visualisation, a body scan or a repeated mantra). While there’s no specific way to ‘meditate properly’, newcomers will find guided meditation especially rewarding.

We have a variety of meditation classes instructed by . To start your 2 week free trial head on over to www.yogaconnect.co.za.

Pranayama, or breath control, is a main component of yoga. It's frequently practiced with yoga postures and meditation. The goal of pranayama is to strengthen the connection between your body and mind.

Thousands of years ago, medical practitioners from the East made a remarkable discovery. They noticed that consciously manipulating the breath could have profound effects on their physical, mental, and spiritual states. This led to the creation of pranayama: ancient yogic breathing techniques that promoted the flow of life force energy, known as prana, in the body.

How Does Pranayama Breathing Affect the Body?
The body needs oxygen-rich blood to function and create energy. Oxygen is carried through the blood in two ways:
1: Oxygen attaching to haemoglobin (protein inside red blood cells)
2: Oxygen dissolving in the body’s plasma (liquid portion of blood)
Research shows that pranayama deep breathing exercises that focus on the lower part of the lungs maximize the absorption of oxygen. When we practice a breathwork technique that slows down our breathing, we take longer and fewer inhalations. This helps us get more oxygen into our bodies.

Some days we wake up and just getting out of bed seems like a task. These are the days when we need Yoga the most.

Our bodies desire movement and the more we move the more we desire it. Finding time for that movement in our ever busy schedules is not always easy but it definitely needs to be a priority.

Vinyasa yoga is powerful form of yoga that has a positive effect on all three faculty – body, mind, and soul and is perfect for your every day practice.

We have a wide variety of Vinyasa classes to choose from.

Yoga HIIT

Yoga HIIT Is the Ultimate for Stretching, Strength, and Cardio. High-intensity interval training is a wonderful workout to get your heart rate up, while the yoga portion of the workout will assist your heart rate as it slows down. Practicing yoga HIIT daily is a great way to give your heart exactly what it needs to maintain strong, optimal health.

As any trainer will tell you that a good fitness routine includes elements of cardio, strength training, and stretching.

HIIT yoga is exactly what it sounds like: A yoga session and a HIIT class rolled into one. The classes are structured with a combination of high-intensity, cardio-based flows that will get your heart pumping and your muscles working, and slow-flow stretches to relieve any tension.

How to choose the right Yoga Mat?

A years ago, there was only one basic type of yoga mat — made of PVC and noted for its stickiness — and your only choice was whether to buy purple or blue. Now, there’s a yoga mat to suit every priority and preference.

Beyond a color and pattern that suits your style, your yoga mat needs to keep you stable in your poses; it needs to be storable and portable, yet comfy and cushy. You may also want your mat to be environmentally friendly. These aspects of your mat's personality are all affected by how the mat is made: how thick it is, what it's made of, and its surface texture.

A few pointers we like to look for in a new Mat.

1. THICKNESS
Why it’s important: The thickness of your yoga mat has a lot to do with how comfortable it is — too thin, and your knee may get banged up during crescent lunge.

2. MATERIAL
Why it’s important: The material your yoga mat is made of dictates its texture, stickiness, eco-friendliness, and sponginess (how much it yields to pressure), and how it wears over time.

3. TEXTURE
Why it’s important: The texture of your yoga mat dictates how much traction it provides. Like stickiness, texture affects how much slipping and sliding you do. It provides physical barriers to sliding (whereas stickiness relies on suction). And because texture affects the way a yoga mat feels, it’s also a component of overall comfort.

4. STICKINESS
Why it’s important: A sticky yoga mat keeps you from sliding all over the place and helps you maintain your alignment as you move from one pose to another, as well as when you hold poses for several seconds.

5. ECO-FRIENDLINESS
Why it’s important: As yogis, we hold dear the tenet of ahimsa, or non-violence. That makes practicing on a yoga mat that will ultimately end up clogging a landfill for decades to come troublesome.

Our recommendation of a great Yoga Mat Brand in SA that we feel ticks all the boxes - (www.novawoolf.com)
