Significant link found between heme iron, found in red meat and other animal products, and type 2 diabetes risk 17/08/2024

Significant link found between heme iron, found in red meat and other animal products, and type 2 diabetes risk Higher intake of heme iron, the type found in red meat and other animal productsβ€”as opposed to non-heme iron, found mostly in plant-based foodsβ€”was associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a new study led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Wh...

We share 82% of our genes with cows and 80% with dogs. The brains of cows and dogs, which give rise to their sentience, are very similarly constructed. The neurons, synapses and dendrites work precisely the same, and the elements that give rise to action potentials, calcium and potassium, are exactly the same as those in humans. The brain regions that are involved in emotions and empathy, including the hippocampus, amygdala, insular cortex and others, are well-conserved in both these species and humans. The hormones that course through their blood and trigger emotions are the same, as are the neurotransmitters that communicate pain to the brain.

There is no reason to regard these two creatures any differently when it comes to moral consideration, yet we kill one and treat the other like family.

Why does this happen? Because we created a dividing line eons ago when we were too ignorant and stupid to know that the chasm we invented was the product of convenience rather than logic.

But now that we know, there is a moral imperative to regard them both as moral subjects. It's the intelligent thing to do.

For every 100 calories of grain fed to farmed animals, you only get: 40 calories of milk OR 22 calories of eggs OR 12 calories of chicken OR 10 calories of pork OR 3 calories of beef. This does not rise to the level of 'wasteful' or 'extravagant', it's just stupid, whether one examines it from an economic or resource utilisation perspective.

What Speciesists are really saying is that they are just animals that missed the cognitive revolution brought on by the growth of the neocortex, especially the prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex, involved in empathy, theory of mind, and perspective-taking.

In short, Speciesism is a form of arrested development.

Where there is human ambition and animal involvement, there will be animal neglect and abuse. This is true whether we speak of cat and dog shows, dog racing, dog fighting, bullfighting, horse racing, equestrian sports, or any 'sports' in which animals are effectively sports equipment or means to human ends. Humans will cheat or treat animals like commodities, because the end result is a reflection of the human ego. No animal should ever be placed in the position wherein the outcome is something they cannot comprehend or where their well-being is placed at risk for an endeavour from which they do not benefit.

Those who truly care for the animals are a small minority, and the deeply flawed human moral condition exposes animals to threats to their well-being that cannot be policed. It's time we regarded this human entitlement with the disrespect it deserves.

The problem most people have is that they don't think the Golden Rule applies to other animals. They think this because they perceive there to be Great Divide between human and nonhuman consciousness.

In some cases, they may be right. After all, can nonhuman animals compose symphonies, invent technological marvels, and develop complex systems of governance and ethics? Most humans can't either, but whether we are different cognitively is beside the point.

It is what we have in common with nonhumans that matters when considering the application of the Golden Rule, and in that respect they are our equals: their capacity to suffer.

For those who seek facts, here they are...

I’ve seen a LOT of claims that it’s just the β€œarm chair trainers” who are concerned about horse welfare in upper level sports and that there’s no reason to think elite sport horses have any welfare implications.

But, that’s not true.

The concern for welfare and desire to reform horse welfare in sport is evidence based.

There have been many studies showing trends of stress, many of which repeatedly being linked to the same factors.

There’s also been evidence that horse people, as a general rule, aren’t accurately reading horse behaviour and often misinterpret stress as β€œexcitement.”

Even professionals.

The push to make evidence based changes to modern horse sport isn’t coming from a lack of experience.

Or made up beliefs.

There is merit to it.
