We met her yesterday at Market Lewende Woord - Main. She said 'your sweets are delicious' - between herself and family they've already tasted several on the first day. Visit the Unique market to buy yours.

Truth💙💛

“Parents of special needs children wear capes”.
Unpopular opinion. They Don’t.

I am here to debunk the opinion that “special children are given to special people”.

Whilst this saying is meant with what I am sure is the very best of intentions, it is simply not true.
Parents of children with special needs have no added superpowers. We simply show up, every day, and do our best for our children, just like you do and just like you would.

We have been thrust into circumstances which many of us did not choose. We were not briefed or coached and very often we are dealing with a deep sense of loss of the child that we had thought we would have.

We juggle. We hold down jobs and partnerships and relationships. We do this whilst navigating a new normal. A diary that is full of common to do lists, and a few added medical , therapy, education appointments.

We drop so.many.balls.
We are perpetually tired. Life is full and busy and stressful. We cry, we shout, and we lose our tempers and our patience. And we laugh, oh we laugh.

We often feel that we are continually fighting and failing. We feel that we are not doing enough, that we are not enough for our children, that we are not doing enough for ourselves, for our health, for our other relationships.

We fight every day to keep the worry of the future at bay. It forces us to not look too far ahead, and in doing so it allows us to take in the small wins, the seemingly insignificant steps forward, how far we have come.
There are times that we wish that we could take our children’s diagnosis away, not because we would change our child, but rather that the world would change to embrace them.

We love deeply. So deeply that it often feels like we are holding our own exposed beating hearts in the palms of our hands.
This love, this protection of our children with special needs can be all consuming, it can often bring us to our knees with its intensity.

We are navigating an atypical road. A road often littered with pot poles, speed humps and breakdowns, but more than that a road that is so surprisingly beautiful and colourful and joyous, that it quite literally takes our breath away.

Our journey

Follow the journey of Marnus Willemse and William Booth who became friends while attending the School to Work programme of the Down Syndrome Association Pretoria/Tshwane. They deeply care for each other in a unique way. Marnus is mainly non-verbal while William is a talker. They both love music and dance when the opportunity arises.

Although William is younger than Marnus, he often acts as the older brother and is proud to look after Marnus and involve him in the group’s activities.

Both gentlemen have an older sister and are in the care of their single mothers. They touch hearts wherever they go and love to interact with all who cares.

It is a challenge for people with Down Syndrome to find jobs and an income. M & W Opportunities is the entrepreneurial initiative to start creating an income for Marnus and William. The two men, with the help of their families, started to make delicious Date Balls. These are sold at market days and amongst friends and family.
