What a crazy experience on Leg 3 for Mountain Mammoth and a number of teams on that mountain.
DAY 3! Weathering the storm 🥶🦣 @arworldseries @expafrica #arworldseries #arwc2023 #adventureracing
These remarkable individuals have endured a physical, mental, and emotional rollercoaster for nearly 10 days, embarking on an 840km journey across the Eastern Cape by foot, bike, and kayak.
They managed only 2 to 3 hours of sleep on average each night, battling all kinds of weather, from wind and rain to the blistering sun. It will take them days, perhaps weeks or even months, to fully recover.
They'll carry stories and experiences that only they will truly comprehend.
As family and supporters, we are eternally grateful for their safe finish, completing the full course, their original goal. They paced themselves well and made it through without major injuries.
Our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support!
For supporters not following on Instagram, here is the video update from the team at the end of Leg 9.
They completed that brutal bike and are out on the last hike.
It's raining and no doubt, it will be a tough one for our team!!! So unbelievably proud of their super human strength.

A quick note about the Captain of the Mountain Mammoth team. Let me tell you, she is truly remarkable. Today, we'd like to give a shout-out to her for her ever-smiling face, her sense of humor, and her admirable conduct during these races. Most of all, a shout-out to her leadership. She carries her own weight and never relies on the men in the team to assist her. However, on days like today, she lends a helping hand to a teammate feeling off, keeping the team united and in high spirits at all times. Respect to Helen Kernohan!

Day 6 update - The team successfully completed the challenging 224km bike leg after a restful night in Jansenville. Russell, who wasn't feeling his best today, took a rest at Transition 7 before embarking on a 64km trek, followed by a 124km bike ride through the Baviaanskloof to Oyster Bay.
They plan to rest somewhere in the Baviaanskloof tonight.
Currently, the Mountain Mammoth team is on the full course as they did not choose to short course and made the cut-off time.
They had a delightful encounter with familiar faces from other teams and took a moment to celebrate by singing a quick birthday song for Nelson Yañez from Team 100, Vulcania Pucon Chile.
The final 34km beach trek from Oyster Bay to Cape St Francis Resort will test their limits, as they must complete it before the race cutoff on Saturday.

Transition 7 bustled with teams arriving this afternoon. They were balancing bike disassembly, map updates, and learning about race and route changes. The teams also enjoyed delicious food from Noorspoort outside Steytlerville.
It provided a wonderful opportunity to reunite with Mammoth friends and familiar faces, all of them in great spirits.
The Mountain Mammoth Team is currently outside of Jansenville making their way towards T7. The cut-off at TA 7 is at 13h00 on Wednesday [25th October 2023].
Teams who do not reach this transition by the cut-off will be required to cycle via the "alternative route" directly to the finish line.

For the first time in the race, Mountain Mammoth has reached a town during daylight.
The joy on their faces as they restock and enjoy some quality food is invaluable. Due to the strict weight limitations of the bike and transition boxes, they had to remove some of their valuable food supplies before the race commenced.

Following a 3km hike after their paddle, the team reached T6 in good spirits. They quickly assembled their bikes, tended to their feet, had a meal, and set off on the extensive 224km bike ride.
During their journey, they will take a much-needed rest by the roadside. They are currently on their way to CP 47.
Steytlerville will be their next transition point as they prepare for the next leg, a 60km hike through the Baviaans

Mountain Mammoth had an enjoyable yet hard day on the river with
a few unexpected swims and their wet bag malfunctioned, leaving their gear wet for the upcoming leg, which is less than ideal. They are now at Transition 6, preparing bikes and devising a strategy for the demanding 224km bike ride to Steytlerville. The next hours will test them both physically and mentally

Day 5 of the ARWC 2023 commenced and the team is looking great on the water.
Kudos to these dedicated individuals who, despite their demanding day jobs, have embraced the challenge of the grueling 840km Adventure Racing World Championship in Kouga. Fueled by their love and passion for adventure racing, they press on through each leg of the race.
As they enter Day 5, they face the next 302 kilometers on water and bike, interspersed with a 13-kilometer hike. This phase of the race will test their ability to maintain focus despite sleep deprivation, work as a cohesive team to support one another through fatigue, and rely on their lead navigator, Damian Giulietti, to keep them on course, avoiding unnecessary added kilometers.
Well done to this amazing team for finishing Day 4 and the 80km hike.
Course update : Change made to the course
While you were sleeping… a change in plans! ⛈️
Due to high water levels, we've had to make adjustments on the course. Canyon enthusiasts, we're sorry to announce that CP61 and CP62 are now off-limits. Teams will need to adapt and walk directly from CP60 down the Jeep track to T8.
Stay tuned for more updates as the adventure continues.

After a short, well deserved rest, they are making their way on the 10km hike towards that big 60km paddle.
ARWS - Adventure Racing World Series EXP Africa
Mountain Mammoth remains on the full course, having successfully completed the challenging 80km mountain hike from Somerset East to Cradock.
A reminder that the teams currently at T3 are on Day 4, having completed 317km (37%) of the 840km full course within the 9-day timeframe.
They are currently mentally gearing up for another demanding day, likely starting as early as 4 AM tomorrow.
Right now, they deserve a well-earned rest during the dark zone before the hike-paddle leg.
Over the next 48 hours, their journey includes another 10km hike, a 60km paddle, and a 3km hike to reach T6, where they'll commence a grueling 224km bike towards Steytlerville. They are also operating on strict time limits during this race, with a specific departure time from T7 looming, or else they may be short-coursed.
Mountain Mammoth's performance has made us exceptionally proud, and we'll continue to follow and offer our prayers/support as all teams tackle each leg of this expedition.
Brilliant summary of Day 1 and Day 2 Interviews with Mountain Mammoth AR !
So proud of our team.
Hours of tracking and severe weather will make for an interesting update at the end of Leg 3.
Hope they taking care of their feet.
