How did the name "Witwatersrand" originate?

The first settlers in the area were Afrikaans (Dutch) farmers. They started referring to the area as the "Witwatersrand" early on.
A direct translation would be: "Ridge of white waters", but the area is notorious for only having seasonal streams.

The Witwatersrand plateau forms a continental divide, the run off ending in the Indian Ocean and from the South in the Atlantic ocean.
This was referred to by the farmers as the Watersrand (Meaning watershed) only later was the term Waterskeiding used in Afrikaans to describe a watershed.
The "White" most probably refers to the quartz on the ridge that is reflecting white, as the sun shines on it.

Thus "Witwatersrand" should translate to: White watershed.
