HUNKFEST !! So Pablo Airways grabbed my camera and captured these. I showed my wife and made her choose hunk of the day. She unsurprisingly chose me Rory, ( I think shes biased) So in close second place was World champ Cyril. Which would confirm the life's unfairness😆. World Champ and beach Hunk. All comments welcome.
But according to her, The World Champs spectators are in for a treat. 😍

WP trial No 4 : Tableview 19 May 24
YEAAAAA we scored a beeeeaaaautiful wind free day. Could have had bit more swell. But hey, we'll take it !!
The dropping swell and rising tide made finding the right wave difficult. The lack of power favoured the "lighties" with the bigger usuals like Schalk and Mike not making the final.
Leaving a gap for two that haven't been there in a while. Fritz Steinhauser showing top form surfing, coming in third. Jethro Keys making his first (of many to come) final and finishing second. The quickly forgotten cursed 4 place was taken unsurprisingly taken by me (Rory) once again for the millionth time. Mr Consistant himself, and the real live walking wave magnet, Malan Calitz flowed with precision to First Place.
Thank you Gina for slaving away, Schalk for carting all the equipment around.
The best surfer is the one having the most fun.... well that went undoubtedly to Saskia Moniz, that killed it and just couldn't stop smiling
On camera was Rory and Coach Jacque Smit. Who also produced the most amazing drone footage. Hope to see much more of that. THANKS Jacque!

WP trial Number 3 - Sunday 28th April 2024
The pumping wind sent us to Muizenberg, and the lighter folk were almost blown to Simonstown.
Nevertheless, we still had a good day despite the wind and much to be desired waves. But we recognise training includes all kinds of conditions.

Well there still had to be a final and a winner winner chicken dinner. The ever consistent winning streak Francois Steyn did it again, with me (Rory) in second and Awesome Ken Clements in third
Special mentions are having Nakita and Hilgard join us all the way from the UK. Huge thanks once again to Gina for running the day and Schalk making the hard calls and carting all the equipment around.... just the best!

WP Trials Number 2 for 2024.
Our very own wave whisperer and awesome contest director, Schalk Van Wyk, had to make difficult decision as to the comp venue for the day. Conflicting secondary swells and changing winds led the our Wave Guru choosing Van Strand, Melkbos. Turned out to be a great choice, as wind subsided and swell pulsed. Keeping Competitors challenged making wave selection critical.
The path to the final was by no means easy, three competitors emerged, Mike Wessels, Pierre Slabber and Francois Steyn.
Francois's wave selection and smooth surfing won the day, followed by Mike in second and Pierre third. Just to throw a snake amongst the pigeons, Team manager Gina, threw in a wild card finalist.... ME :). Results thereof may not be discussed 😝
Stand out performances went to Jethro keys, getting the Highest air of the day and just going for broke surfing. Marcus Esterhuyse, newly back on the waveski scene, pulled off some classy critical hard turns. Preparation for Worlds Champs for our youngsters is well underway.
Thanks again to all our selfless "servers" on the day and behind the scenes... Gina, Nakita, Daleen, Schalk ..... and all the rest 🐹❤️❤️

Thank you to all the “legends” and current waveski surfers who contributed eulogies and attended the memorial paddle-out at Inner Kom in ideallic weather yesterday. The Smuts Family really appreciated the perfect “send-off” with friends and family in the water and on the shore close-by, against the back-drop of surfers ripping at The Ledge.

Eulogy for Phil Smuts by Charl du Plessis



We're so sad to say goodbye to our friend and legend, Phil Smuts. He fought cancer for a long time but passed away on December 24, 2023. Phil was a huge part of Waveski Surfing, representing Western Province for 19 years, many of these as chairman, and serving as SAWSA president for about 7 years. He was a gifted commercial artist with a great sense of humor and always made us laugh with his cartoons portraying comical happenings in the surf in the WPWSA newsletters. We'll miss him so much.



Phil was a true champion, winning the SA Veterans Champ's a remarkable 9 times and even being named SA Sportsman of the Year in the eighties. I had the privilege of sharing accommodation with him several times, notably at the World Champs in 2000, in Jeffery's Bay alongside W***y Grazer and Mike Wessels. It was his last contest, and I have to say, it was one of the best contests I've ever been part of in my 32 years with the WP Waveski team.



Phil was always super competitive, very fit and loved playing squash and cycling, which he continued until the end. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his son Sean and daughter Camilla.

Phil Smuts’ memorial paddle out will take place at 12 noon on Sunday 21st January at Inner Kom. For those not participating in the paddle-out, they may gather on the shoreline. It would be appreciated if people could bring a small plate of eats and their own drinks.
