Even though South Africa is considered to be relatively food secure, more than 14 million people (35%) are vulnerable to food insecurity. Rural areas are particularly threatened as they include 70% of the countryโ€™s poorest households. Hunger and under-nutrition are both outcomes of inadequate food intake but their meanings differ. Hunger is associated with not eating enough food, while under nutrition refers to the lack of sufficient micronutrients. Addressing malnutrition is not just about ensuring access to food, but about ensuring that there is access to adequate types and diversity of food. Households engaged in food production appeared to achieve greater food security and their nutritional status tended to be better than non-farming families of the same socio-economic status.
Evidence shows that food gardens have some success in acting as a buffer against crisis. Beyond the arguments around food security, they are supported for their proposed ability to provide nutritious food (improved nutrition status) to those who grow them, to provide access to nutritional diversity where this is difficult to achieve (in rural or very poor contexts) and - because they can help to build communities and empower their members.

About Us

As an avid seafarer being stuck on land due to lockdown from COVID-19, with nowhere to go, and not being able to sit at home doing nothing. I was inspired by my fiancรฉ to acquire a new skill. In doing so, I quickly realized how much can be created from your very own home, especially in these times where you are forced to stay indoors. I visited the local Bernina shop in town, and bought myself a second-hand Empisal sewing machine. Had a 5-minute lesson on how to thread the machine, and off I went back home to begin our lockdown period. I watched an endless amount of YouTube videos and โ€˜Voilaโ€™ I taught myself how to sew.

My goal was to create something that can assist families and individuals to grow their own food straight from home. Not knowing how long the pandemic will take to blow over, this seemed to be the trend of all entrepreneurs at the time. I had the idea of a container/grow bag that is made out of a geo-textile fabric. Thick, durable and still easy to sew. This fabric aids to drainage and allows for natural air pruning.

I thoughtโ€ฆ.โ€ You take a seed, and put it in a bagโ€ why not call it, Saad Sak? After all, Afrikaans is my mother tongue, and the product will be made Proudly South African, right here in Somerset West, Cape Town.

I created a few bags, and planted tomatoes, chickpeas, pineapples, granadillas, strawberries and gooseberries in our garden.
