I find it incredulous that a Corporate, SOE, Government Institution, Commerce, Retail or Industrial establishment can spend hundreds of thousands or even millions on a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system and have it monitored by one or two poorly trained operators, or even none!

I have been involved with so many of these and every time I am astounded to see the decision-makers ignore the multitude of elements related to the initial installation and the operation thereof – and then expect an outcome that simply was never to be achieved.

If you spend money on a CCTV system, best you budget for maintenance. Upgrades. Replacements. Proper monitoring. Proper review capability. Audits. Training. The list goes on.

The poor operator gets confronted with a request to find an incident that MAY have taken place, oh somewhere in the last month. My mobile phone went missing. I think it was on my desk….

I get brutal in my questioning about that:

Where did you last use it?
Is there a camera in your office?
Does it fit in a pocket?
Can you not remember the date and time, even if the latter is approximate?

If not, you deserve to have lost your mobile phone, idiot!

A CCTV system must be managed. It must be maintained. Operators must understand the operation and the risks to look for. And for goodness sake, insure it! These four elements will get you going on the path of managing your CCTV application which can and should render great results!

My early childhood was spent on family farms and in small towns in the southern part of what was formerly South West Africa. Gas and paraffin lamps provided lighting, cooking was done on Aga and Esse stoves, or for the less affluent Primus No5 J burners. Bedtime was shortly after sunset and the luxury of light to the "I am ready for bed now" time was reserved for those who had Wolseley, Kohler or Thompson mono-cylinder stationary diesel engines fitted with a generator driven by the flywheel and a canvas or leather belt.

Fast forward many years to mid to late 1990's and early to mid 2000's when I travelled to African countries (leisure and business) and was astounded by the inefficiency of the electrical grid and the extended periods the inhabitants of such countries had to make do without electricity.

The same situation prevails in 2021 in some urban areas in South Africa. Add ESKOM to the mix with load-shedding, load reduction and whatever description could be used for the REAL cause of interrupted electrical feed - power outage comes to mind.

As I am not a doomsday prepper and have not packed a 6" Venter trailer with my most valuable items, tinned and desiccated food and plastic bottles of water alongside my camouflage gear and loaded to the hilt battle jacket, I have reverted to some analysis of my past and how we coped with the electrical supply.

Make no mistake - power outages are here for a while and may become worse.

We have become comfortable in using electricity and the creation of a "flick-a-switch" and modern appliances society.

So what will YOU do if the electrical supply fails tonight, and by tomorrow morning it has not restored? What calamity will it be if it is not restored within a week? Yet, this possibility exists. Andre de Ruyter recently stated that ESKOM is on the precipice of a total blackout and this highly intelligent man is fighting a major battle to prevent just that!

Here is the challenge - switch off your electrical supply tonight and leave it off for three days. It will be an eye-opener.

Watch this space. Some more interesting information is heading your way. You can read it here if your laptop or mobile phone battery has not called it a day yet. If you still have some charge left, share this with your friends. It may be handy one day.

Andre de Ruyter, CEO of ESKOM recently stated that South Africa is on the brink of total electrical black-out, with generation and infrastructure failures posing a massive problem.

Take note - this very learned man is fighting an uphill battle!

Are you prepared for this, should it happen?
