DA Leader John Steenhuisen gives an update on day 2 of his visit to KZN communities affected by the ongoing violence and looting. The DA is on the ground to find lasting solutions to this chaos and to ensure government action. He also gives feedback on his engagement with President Ramaphosa. Here are some of immediate proposals: 1⃣ Surge of SANDF soldiers to assist the SAPS with boots on the ground to take back the initiative from the looters and criminals. 2️⃣ SANDF to use armoured vehicles, troops and helicopters to open up and patrol the major arterial routes, especially the N2 and N3 to enable food supplies, medical supplies and fuel to be able to be brought in. 3️⃣ Massive increase in rubber bullets, tear gas and other crowd control equipment, in many areas SAPS have run out of ammunition and ordinance making crowd control extremely difficult. 4️⃣ A greater joint command centre to co-ordinate the SANDF, SAPS, Metro/municipal police, private security, CPF efforts to better focus on the hotspots. 5️⃣ Better intelligence monitoring of WhatsApp groups, social media accounts to be able to ascertain who is leading the looting and what their plans are and to be able to direct resources there. 6️⃣ Political leadership must get out of their offices and get on the ground to calm communities and show cool-headed leadership, not inflammatory demagoguery on the ground. The DA would like to thank all community members who are standing point in their communities, CPF’s and private security companies that are holding the line of law and order in the face of anarchy and looting. 🇿🇦
