Sentiments of informal traders in SA to be tracked from starting this month
Gqeberha – A business that is owned by young people, the Evoke Research Primary Cooperative, is making a new contribution to initiatives that measure the sentiments of business operators in South Africa by adding the voice of informal traders.
The cooperative has started gathering data this week in various townships and rural areas in order to produce the first Informal Trader Confidence Index in the country.
Inspired by the limited socioeconomic interventions in government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating impact it had on the sector, the cooperative saw it fit to launch the index to shed light on the economics of informal trade.
“It is easy to measure the impact of business cycles and shocks on formal businesses given the many measures used to record and report on business activities but this is not the case with informal traders,” says Musa Mdumbulu, director for socioeconomic research at Evoke Research.
Although a significant contributor to the national economy and an alternative source of employment for many South Africans, the informal trading sector is often in a precarious position as those who participate in it are not beneficiaries of typical benefits such as bail outs and loans seen in the formal sector.
It is also an under-studied field, with venture capitalists often showing little interest in understanding the dynamics of informal trade in an economic sense and its significance in policy and business. The sector is also severely constrained by insufficient business infrastructure, a historically hostile political and policy environment, sociocultural barriers, and a lack of funding amongst other critical factors. And with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, informal traders are now more vulnerable than ever as government socioeconomic measures taken have not been as inclusive and sustainable as they could be, leaving key stakeholders behind in the process.
The index, according to Mdumbulu, is thus timely and relevant as it seeks to provide long-term recommendations on the regulation of informal trade that will prove supportive to its participants. The outcomes of the index will be presented at the cooperative’s quarterly presentations beginning in September 2021.
The Evoke Research Primary Cooperative is a Black-owned, majority youth and woman-led, start-up business that aims to be the architects of knowledge that positively transforms the socioeconomic landscape of Africa.
A multifaceted venture specialising in research, political risk consulting, and publishing, Evoke seeks to incorporate previously marginalised forms of research and knowledge in its research outputs while pushing for the promotion of skills and development of Africans by Africans.
Ends.
