V&A Waterfront Audio Tour
The V&A Waterfront is one of Africa’s most popular destinations with more than 24 million visitors every year. How did the once strong bonds between the city and its port become severed? And in what ways has the V&A Waterfront endeavored to restore these connections, offering new opportunities for everyone to rediscover Cape Town's maritime heritage?
This audio walking tour will provide answers through intriguing objects such as shipping containers and unfinished highways. You'll explore the modest beginnings of the V&A Waterfront, which started in 1989 with Ferryman’s Tavern, and encounter some of the key figures who have influenced its development.
Join us as we journey through the rich tapestry of history and culture, seamlessly weaving the past into the present. Whether it's your maiden visit to the V&A Waterfront or your hundredth, this walking tour promises to reveal hidden historical gems, the intricate ballet of daily life, and the thrilling prospects that lie ahead.

Bushman Rock Art in the Kruger National Park
History depicted in natural pigments
Meander through the ancient Bushman paintings in Kruger National Park, where each stroke tells a story of the San people’s rich heritage. These rock art sites, scattered across the park, offer a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural traditions of one of Africa’s oldest communities. As you explore, you’ll find depictions of animals, people, and abstract symbols, all created with natural pigments. Visiting these sites in person allows you to connect deeply with the past and appreciate the artistry up close. Embark on this journey and witness history etched in stone.
Spiritual Rock Art
Did you know that San rock art wasn’t just about sharing knowledge? Many of the paintings were believed to hold supernatural power, which shamans used for their spiritual journeys. It’s fascinating how the rock itself acted like a veil, connecting our world with the spirit world.
Khoisan Spiritual Rock Art
The San people also saw water bodies as a vital link to their ancestors. When colonial farmers started settling in the Drakensberg valleys, the San began painting more images of horses and cattle in their rock art shelters. These animals, much like the Rhedbuck, were believed to be connected to rain.
Most researchers believe that San art is deeply spiritual. It really captures the rituals and spirit-world experiences of their shamans, known as !gi:xa. But if you take a closer look at the rock art in Kruger, you’ll notice some naturalistic elements too. For instance, there are several sites showing hunters with bows and arrows, which seem to depict the real-life practice of hunting.
What’s fascinating is that you’ll often come across depictions of trance states. And a unique regional theme in Kruger is the appearance of these strange, otherworldly ‘vapour trail’ figures. They look like humans with long, streamer-like protrusions. It’s almost like they’re blending the spiritual with the everyday.
The Khoisan
Did you know that the San people, often thought of as foragers, have lived in the Kalahari Desert and regions of Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Northern South Africa? The term “San” comes from the Khoekhoe language and means “those who pick things up from the ground,” highlighting their lifestyle as foragers who don’t own livestock.
For thousands of years, the San lived in harmony with nature, following the seasons and the migrations of game. They left no trace of their presence except for the incredible stories they painted on rock shelters. It’s fascinating how their art has endured through time, telling us so much about their way of life.
The techniques they used to create these paintings, their symbolism, and their meanings have sparked much debate. However, one thing is clear: these paintings hold deep spiritual significance for the San. Through them, we can catch a glimpse of their way of life, the animals they encountered, and their shamanic practices.
Kruger Rock Art
Imagine walking through Kruger National Park and stumbling upon ancient San rock art. Did you know that most of these artworks date back between 1,500 and 3,000 years? It’s fascinating! The San people often depicted animals like the eland and mountain reedbuck. But that’s not all—you’ll also find giraffes, buffalo, sable, roan, impala, and elephants among the images.
What’s even more intriguing are the dots and dotted lines scattered throughout the art. Some researchers believe these symbols represent potency. It’s amazing how these ancient artists captured their world and beliefs in such a timeless way.
Kruger rock art has its own unique style, but it’s also part of a much larger tradition of rock painting in southern Africa, where you can find tens of thousands of rock art sites scattered across the region. While most of the rock art in Kruger is located in the south-western foothills, recent research indicates that these shelter paintings are actually widespread throughout the Park.
The Beautiful Zebra Painting
According to de Rosner, one of the most striking images is that of a zebra found in a shelter near Bushman Wilderness Camp. The painting cleverly uses the dark rock to suggest the zebra’s body, with only the white stripes painted. The materials used for these images include various plant saps, ochre, ash, and blood, possibly to enhance their potency.
It is thought that South Africa has the richest treasure trove of rock art in the world. This ancient legacy of the San people (Bushmen) can be viewed in national parks and nature reserves all over the country.
Man’s interaction with the lowveld environment over many centuries – from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela – is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park’s natural assets.
