ByeGwaai co-founder Samantha Filby published an article in the The Conversation today highlighting the impact of socioeconomic status on quitting smoking in sub-Saharan Africa.
Here are 3 key takeaways from her article 🗝️
1️⃣ People most likely to attempt to quit ci******es are wealthier and better-educated, meaning those who are already poorer and less educated and at higher risk of to***co-related illness would benefit from subsidised medical support to quit.
2️⃣ Of all the measures undertaken to reduce the demand for to***co, the least progress has been made with offering to***co users help to quit, according to WHO guidelines.
3️⃣ While to***co taxation is the most effective and efficient way to reduce to***co consumption, no low-income countries offer best-practice services. Governments should provide subsidised services to make support for quitting more accessible.
We're here to help you quit when you need us. Celebrate World No To***co Day 2023 by making your commitment to quitting.

To***co use is costly, but so is quitting. Surveys of 8 African countries show who needs help In low-income countries, to***co use is often associated with lower income and less education. These users can’t afford to pay for counselling and medication.
ByeGwaai founder Kieran McLeod wrote a piece about the impact of to***co and ni****ne on breastfeeding for the Sister Lilian Centre's blog. With this year's theme for World No To***co Day drawing attention to the negative impact of the to***co industry on agriculture and food insecurity in LMICs, I wanted to highlight that to***co does not only negatively impact the food on our plates, but also decreases both the quality and quantity of breast milk when compared to that of a non-smoker.
It's not enough just to not smoke near your baby. Many of the harmful chemicals in to***co are passed on to your baby via breastfeeding which can lead to numerous health and wellbeing issues for your baby.
But the great news is that many of these issues can be reversed by quitting smoking. If you're interested to learn more give the post a read ⤵️

Samantha Filby, co-founder of ByeGwaai, recently chatted with Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism about South Africa's battle against to***co smoking and how the government could be helping smokers quit, but isn't.
As the leading cause of death and disease around the world, smoking not only has an impact on the health and wellbeing of us as individuals, but also on the economy as a whole, costing South Africa close to R60 billion every single year.
Read the article below for more about what needs to change for South Africa to really kick smoking in the butt!
Bad habits: How the government can help you quit smoking — but isn’t – Bhekisisa South Africa’s anti-smoking policies rely on increased sin taxes to cut smoking rates in the country. Experts say this is no longer enough, but people who use government facilities have very few other tools available to help them stop.

Wondering why you can’t get a good night’s sleep?😴 You can thank the ni****ne in your system for lack of restful 💤!
Smoking to***co is incredibly addictive, this is due to the presence of ni****ne in to***co products.🚬 Once in the body, ni****ne stimulates the release of several neurotransmitters. The release of these neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, dopamine etc.) triggers feelings of pleasure, motivation and relaxation. However, the fluctuations in these neurotransmitter levels can also affect your sleep-wake cycle. 🚭👊
