On the 24th of July 2024, Professor Bassey Antia delivered the keynote address at the event "Teaching Through Diverse Tongues: Multilingualism in Every Classroom." This event featured the launch of case studies from Rhodes University, which were compiled into a booklet titled "Embedding Multilingualism in the Curriculum - Using Language as a Resource for Teaching and Learning."
These case studies, co-authored by academics from various departments in the university, including our Management and Economics Department, highlight practical approaches to implementing multilingual education. They emphasise leveraging students diverse language skills to enhance teaching and learning. Here are some snaps from the event.
On the evening of 16 July 2024, Rhodes University celebrated the dedication of 64 staff members at a Long-Service Awards ceremony, recognising their collective 1,495 years of service. Among the honourees was our very own Mr. Trevor Amos, who proudly marked his 30th year in the University!
Meet Takudzwa Makuwa, a Master's student in Economics and a standout leader at Rhodes University! Recently chosen to be one of the student facilitators for the Rhodes University Bootcamp, Takudzwa guided Grade 11 and 12 student leaders. He shares his experience at this bootcamp and concludes with advice for students on the importance of leadership roles, especially when transitioning to the workforce after graduation.

What an inspiring day! On the 16th of May, our Management 1 class had the honor of hosting Rhodes alumna Tulisa Mondliwa, the visionary founder of AfriKare. Tulisa shared her journey from struggling with finding haircare products to building a successful handmade skincare, hair, and homecare brand. She emphasized the importance of vision, planning, and motivation in business, and showed us that even challenges can be overcome with determination and passion. Rhodes UniversityEconomics Department recently held a three-day workshop for new Masters and PhD students, led by Professor Meshach Aziakpono. The event, attended by 25 students, focused on imparting key research skills in applied economics and finance, including research design, data analysis, and ethical considerations.
Professor Jen Snowball also emphasized ethical research practices and the practical application of methodologies. A second workshop is planned for July to further enhance students' abilities in literature review and data analysis in preparation for their thesis proposals. Feedback from participants was highly positive, highlighting the workshop's role in building a supportive academic environment and facilitating access to extensive university resources. This initiative reflects Rhodes University's commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

Rhodes University is proud to be a part of the ARUA network and to have one of our researchers co-leading one of the newest ARUA cluster of Research Excellence. Creative Economies: Cultures, Innovation and Sustainability’ is a research cluster of excellence which aims to support the development of more equitable, innovative and sustainable creative economies, in a sector that has been recognised for its potential to contribute up to 10% of global GDP by 2030. Jen Snowball, a professor at Rhodes University’s department of Economics co-leads this cluster together with Duro Oni (University of Lagos) and Roberta Comunian and Eka Ikpe (King’s College London), the Cluster brings together cultural policy organisations and university researchers from across Africa and Europe.
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is a network of universities from different countries and different historical backgrounds, but with a common vision. ARUA aims to enhance research and graduate training in member universities through a number of channels, including the setting up of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) to be hosted by member universities.

Achieving Decent Work and Economic Growth is 8 of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This course is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students interested in economics, development, and other key concepts related to the SDGs.
This 6 week course is hosted by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) and aims to shed light on policy interventions that can support sustainable and equitable economic development while creating opportunities for decent work. #

Meet Professor Jen Snowball. The new Head of the Economics Department. Jen Snowball has been invited to become a member of the Board of Advisors of the Creative Economy Section of UNCTAD. The primary role of the Board of Advisors is to provide the UNCTAD Creative Economy Section with guidance on the implementation of its mandate given to it by Member States, such as by helping to promote awareness of the Section, its mission, its work and to maximize its impact globally.
She has also been awarded a Global Visiting Fellowship at King's College in London for April and May of 2023. The title of the project is : ‘Creative Economies in Africa: Fashion and Design in South Africa'.
