South Africa tops list of FRIENDLIEST nations in the world

Whether you’re visiting a new country for the first time on your travels, or emigrating, the friendliness of its locals can make all the difference.
Warmth and hospitality go a long way in making one feel welcome in a foreign land, and apparently South Africa has this in bucketloads.
According to a scientific study conducted by Remitly, 3 000 participants from around the world provided answers using the Big 5 Personality Test.
Remitly is the largest independent digital money transmitter in the US, and participants were asked a series of questions from the ‘agreeableness’ section of this Test.
Mzansi (South Africa) ended up topping the list of friendliest nations, scoring an emphatic 36.43 out of 40.

The Big 5 Personality Test
The five key personality traits according to the scientific ‘Big Five’ model are openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism.
Agreeableness is deemed the most effective way to gauge social harmony, and this is where South Africa shone.
Agreeableness also assesses traits like friendliness and a willingness to compromise. Respondents were asked how they feel about people from different nations in terms of concern for others, making time for people, and an ability to make people feel at ease.
Higher scores indicate greater warmth and friendliness, generosity, and general optimism about human nature.
It also makes these people potential friends for those seeking social connections, especially in a new country.
Greeks scored 33.71 on the test, making Greece the second-friendliest nation in the world. The UK ranked as the 18th friendliest nation (though perceived as the second-friendliest by residents of other countries.)
The top 10 friendliest nations in the world, according to the survey, are as follows:

2. Greece
3. Croatia
4. Mexico
5. Sweden
6. Australia
7. Canada
8. Germany
9. Estonia
10. Belgium

South Africa has winning attributes
South Africa’s outstanding natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, high standard of living and affordabilty make it a popular destination.
Add the accolade of ‘friendliest nation’ and there are many compelling reasons to visit or move there. This is how Remitly interpreted South Africa’s winning score…

“Residents are known for being warm and welcoming, making it easy for travellers and visitors alike to feel at ease around them. It’s not uncommon to be greeted by polite strangers while walking down the street, and South Africans are generally happy to socialise, by engaging in conversations and showing off their good humour, making plenty of jokes. An added plus point is that there are eleven official languages spoken in South Africa (English, Afrikaans and nine indigenous languages), meaning that there are plentiful ways to communicate with the locals and make new friends.”

The founding father and commander of 32 Battalion, retired Col Jan Breytenbach, passed away peacefully in the company of his family at the Mediclinic George today, 16 June, at 12:30.

Deur haar deelname wil Mia, wat sedert tweejarige ouderdom gehoorgestremd is en 'n kogleêre inplanting ontvang het wat haar in staat gestel het om vir die eerste keer in haar lewe te hoor, ander inspireer om struikelblokke te oorkom, deursettingsvermoë te wys en groot te droom. Haar reis is 'n bewys dat ons struikelblokke nie dit waartoe ons in staat is, kan belemmer nie.

Found this beautiful gentle giant yesterday in Mossel Bay, they officially starting to move in 🤩🤩

The southern right whale (*Eubalaena australis*) is a large baleen whale found in the Southern Hemisphere. These whales are known for their distinctive features, such as callosities on their heads, broad backs without a dorsal fin, and long, arching mouths that begin above the eye. They are typically black in color, often with white belly patches.

Key Characteristics:

**Size**: Adults can reach up to 15-18 meters (49-59 feet) in length and weigh up to 47 tonnes.

**Callosities**: Rough patches of skin on their heads, which are unique to each individual and help researchers identify them.

**Behavior**: Known for their curious nature and tendency to approach boats. They are also known for breaching and tail-slapping.

**Habitat**: They migrate between high-latitude feeding grounds in the summer and low-latitude breeding grounds in the winter. Commonly found off the coasts of Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

**Diet**: They primarily feed on zooplankton, including copepods and krill, by filtering them through their baleen plates.

Conservation Status:
Southern right whales were heavily hunted during the whaling era, leading to a significant decline in their population. They are currently protected, and their numbers are slowly recovering. However, they still face threats from ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and habitat degradation.

Interesting Facts:
**Reproduction**: Females give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of about 12 months. Calves are nursed for up to a year.

**Lifespan**: Southern right whales can live up to 70 years or more.

**Social Structure**: They are generally solitary or found in small groups, although larger aggregations can occur in feeding or breeding areas.

Overall, southern right whales are a fascinating species with unique behaviors and characteristics, contributing significantly to marine biodiversity and ecosystems.

I haven't posted here for a while as we moved from Centurion to Oudtshoorn exactly a year ago. We bought a guesthouse out of an estate and it had been closed for 3 years. Needless to say we had to renovate the heritage home completely, and start the garden from scratch. Taking out more than 40 metric tons of garden waste.

Ons kondig met trots mnr. Walt Böhme se aanstelling as hoofafrigter van die SWD o/18 Cravenweekspan vir 2024 aan.

Mnr. Böhme was die afgelope paar seisoene die hulpafrigter van die SWD Cravenweekspan, maar vanjaar sal hy in beheer van die span wees.

Mnr. Böhme, ook 'n oudleerder van ons skool, het al ook ander SWD-jeugspanne afgerig en weet dus waaroor dit gaan. Hy is ook tans ons skool se eersterugbyspan se hoofafrigter.

Die Cravenweek vind vanjaar vanaf 24 tot 29 Junie in Krugersdorp by die Hoërskool Monument plaas en SWD skop dan hul veldtog teen die Valke af.

Nelsrivierdam- Caltizdorp

Die Nelsrivierdam buite Calitzdorp was gebou na dit duidelik geword het dat die onreëlmatige reënvalpatrone tot skielike droogtes lei. Die dam is in 1918 voltooi en is die oudste betonswaartekragdam in Suid-Afrika.
‘n Swaartekragdam is massiewe konstruksies, gebou uit beton of messelwerk, wat slegs deur sy eie massa die krag van waterdruk teenwerk.

Die dam is 8km buite Calitzdorp en die leiwater vore word vandag steeds gebruik.

Uittreksel uit Water deur FA Venter (pp313-314)

By Calitzdorp staan die eerste betondam wat vir besproeiings doeleindes in Suid-Afrika gebou is. Smeltende sneeu en standhoudende fonteine het die Nelsrivier in die ou dae gevoed en tien jaar voor die Groot Trek het die boere daarlangs reeds besproeiing toegepas. In 1893 al is daar na goeie formasies gesoek om die fondamente van ’n beoogde dam op te bou. Die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog het alles egter onderbreek en daarna het die depressie gevolg wat tot 1910 geduur het. In 1913 kon die werk aan die dam eers begin.

Die beton – 210m lank en 34 hoog – het sowat 90 000 metrieke ton ingesluit Die inhoudsvermoë is 5,9miljoen kubieke meter. Die bouers van die dam was nie ’n bietjie trots op die masjinerie wat hulle gebruik het nie. Daar was ’n kabelspoor van 330m wat elke 6 minute 3050kg (3 ton) materiaal, klip of beton by enige deel van die bouwerk kon aflewer en ’n eenheid wat klippe gebreek en beton gemeng het en wat elke 6 minute 0,76 kubieke meter beton kon lewer. Al die sement en voorrade moes 64km ver van Oudshoorn af aangery word (Calitzdorp het in daardie jare nog geen spoorverbinding gehaad nie) terwyl sand 8 km ver met muil- en donkiewaens karwy moes word.

Die sierlike damwal met sy 2 besonderse hoogwater sluise 12 m bo die rivierbedding, staan vandag nog net soos die dag toe dit klaar gebou is. By Calitzdorp het die besproeiings water ’n omwenteling teweeg gebring. Die omskepping van die kaal veld in wingerde, groentebeddings en lusernakkers – alles binne 3 jaar – was merkwaardig. Daar is destyds aanspraak gemaak dat Calitzdorp meer druiwe per halwe hektaar produseer as enige ander plek in die wêreld. Jong stokkies, 457 mm hoog en slegs 3 jaar oud het elk van 6 tot 7 kg druiwe gelewer. Onder die besproeiingsdam is grond teen R990 per ha verkoop. In een geval het ’n boer van 2,5 ha wingerd ’n rosyntjie-oes van R1200 verkry met rosyne teen 5,5c/kg.
