300 winmag

A True “African all-rounder”

While the title of “Africa’s all-rounder” is heavily debated, one strong contender is the original “Winmag”

Wi******er designed the Winmag in 1963 and since then it has become one of the most versatile hunting cartridge in the world. Law enforcement adopted it as the first long range sniper cartridge and it’s at home on the range as well, with a lot of 1000yard records on it’s sleeve.

Load data:
178gr ELD-X
Norma brass
VV N560
3079fps

Happy Hunting 😄👍

The “Ackley Truth”

While Pete Otto doesn’t sound to familiar, adding his last name Ackley does

His work began with the .22 Hornet Ackley and .17-22 Hornet Ackley but Uncle Pete’s work was far from finished, 40 degree shoulder with and maximum body-taper(308win) are now a days considered an “Ackely”

While the shoulder angle lends it self to an very long brass life, as well as the body-taper, the ekstra space for spice makes it one of the most notorious barrel burners of all, the onus lies with the speed-demons who believe every once of space must be used for “the need for speed”

Few “Ackley’s” are more used in South Africa than the 243win, 22-250rem, 260rem and 223rem, with the foremost the most famously known, while there are a lot of them, now a days, if its “improved” its an “ackley”.

“Take your parent cartridge, load and fire, and viola you got you Improved version” does sound easy, we advise you load your cartriges to an generous “Jam” to fireform your brass correctly

We at Steyn Ballistics believe the nomenclature of “improved” does belong to uncle Pete Ackley, we have also seen that al of the Ackley’s are certainly an improvement on there parent cases, enjoy your Flat-shooting, hard-hitting speed-demon, happy hunting

“The Tikkakoski”

Truly and utterly the most accurate rifels to see the inside of Steyn Ballistics is the Tikka and big brother Sako, both of them are made in Riihimäki now, but Tikka in the old of days was produced in Tikkakoski like the name implies.

Had a Client who got his new Tikka CTR 6,5 24” tactical barrel (18mm at muzzel) requested a load and so it began to take shape.

143 Hornady ELD-x
Rheinmetall S361
Peterson brass
Federal 205m Match
2751 fps

The 3rd load did well, but was the 4th load a champ?! One of the best groups of the year on 200meter with a stock standard factory rifle.

Happy shooting 😄👍

Old Powder, new tricks

Me and a buddy talked about 6,5StaBall and how it almost resembles S361, and so the testing began…

6,5 CM
S361 somchem
130gr Norma (molly)
Lapua brass
Ferderal match primers
99% cartridge filling

And as you can see the old Powders still do the Job. Just a note - There is no reloading data on S361 for the 6.5Creed, I advise you start low and work your way up.

All loads were shot at 200m, the 4 loads all has a different C.O.L.

.308win - since 1965 still winning matches and downing large game

Sako TRG 22
Krieger 1/12 med palma
155gr Sierra MK palma
Lapua brass
CCi BR2
Somchem S341

Both 3 shot groups were shot consecutively at 200meters with a 0.2mm COL difference

“Tack Driver” - 200m group

6,5 Creedmoore
130gr Norma Match (Molly)
Lapua SRP brass (neck turned)
Federal SRM GM205M
VV N550

When everything comes together on a day…the Creedmoore was developed by Hornady in 2006 to do one thing, dominate the range with barrel-life in mind, not the flattest shooter, but it bucks the wind pretty well, 100 years after the well known and tested 30-06 Springfield

6,5 swede (6,5x55)
Here you can see the granddaddy of all the 6,5mm cartridges, maby Granddad, but very far form obsolete 😄👍

140gr Berger VLD
VV N550
Lapua brass
CCi 200

Tikka T3x with Krieger barrel
This “Old Swede” still gives the new 6,5mm cartridge a “Pakslae”
