Meet Joao
left tusk weight: 132 lbs
left tusk size: 8'9"
right tusk weight: 121 lbs
right tusk size: 8'3"

One of the loved “Magnificent Seven” legend - tuskers that once roamed South Africa’s world-renowned Kruger National Park. What made these beasts exceptional were their huge, impressive tusks, all weighing in excess of 100 pounds each.

The man who knew these seven tuskers intimately, who studied them closely and who has become somewhat of a legend himself is Dr. Anthony Hall-Martin, world-famous expert on the ecology and behavior of both the African elephant and the black rhinoceros.

Joao was Dr. Anthony Hall-Martin's favourite elephant. He spent more time with this bull during his years of studying the ecology and behaviour of elephants in the Kruger National Park than with any other individual animal. Dr. Hall-Martin named this bull after the Joao windmill in the Kruger Park where he first encountered the big bull.

In 1982 Joao was wounded by ivory poachers and hit four times by AK-47 bullets. The park rangers immobilised him and treated his wounds, thereby ensuring a speedy recovery.

In 1984 Joao broke both tusks off 12 - 16 in (20 - 30 cm) from the lip line and the pieces were never found. For this reason these are the only tusks not exhibited at the Elephant Museum in Letaba rest camp.

Hence the exclusive bronze sculptures. By artist Jackie Noakes

Yes they are finally here!!!! Available at Pintura art gallery now!

Dagan was born in Johannesburg, 1977.
This particular medium is watercolour and acrylic.
It tries to capture light, atmosphere and colour in all their forms from portaits to landscapes to waterlilies.

Style is hard to explain but it encaptulates technical difficulty, capturing the subject, Imagination and the material itself.

These principles are highly interlinked and sometimes finding a balance, is the most difficult part.
