Our journey to the 2020 Cape Epic...
I bought a mountain bike from Martin (Ride Life, George) in May 2018 for me and my son Riaan. I wanted entry level bicycles but good enough to last. Martin recommended the Giant Anthem with a 2x10 Shimano group-set. His words : “This is good value for money and I will do the Cape Epic with this bike”.
Well, that is it – then we do the Cape Epic in 2020!!!
I started riding and the whole idea of Cape Epic was very well and alive in my head. I decided to make something big out of it and it resulted in planning for 2 teams. 1 team will be me and another 50year old so we can ride in the “my class” and the other team must be one that can at least be top 50 (or top 40 perhaps). If Coral Clean is going to be the main sponsor and organiser then we have to get some decent exposure.
So I chose Stanley James as my riding buddy. He is an experienced MTB’er and on our official “team up meeting” I promised him that I will train hard and proper not to frustrate him on the event. Fortunately he took my word and agreed to be my partner. The “semi-pro team” would always be Hannes Neethling (my cousin’s son, who introduced me to MTB and Martin), a well known MTBer with many trophies on National and Local level in the sport. He had to choose a team mate and he chose Dion Froneman, his MTB buddy from school and also with a room full of trophies and accolades in the sport. They will be the team going for position and they will also be the team that will capture the imagination as wheelies and fun tricks on the bikes will be part and parcel of a great show and performance. This will definitely end up on TV, on magazine covers and future MTB and Epic marketing material.
